"I would have to say this is a veteran team," the coach said inan interview. "We should be able to play good defense, we can hit the | Hughes, Ron Parish, Ralph Fairman and Roger Watson. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 5, 1987 -- 27 New look for Port fastball squad ball, but pitching will be the key." Pitching is almost always the key to success at this level of fastball competition, and this season for the Eagles, the burden will fall on the arms of three hurlers: right-hander Laurie Williams, south-side Ken Ir- vine and righty Faul Graham who will also see spot duty at several other positions, when necessary. Behind the plate, Rob Evans, who is now free from shoulder problems, will handle the catching chores. Jay Williams at first, Dave Dickson at second, Ken Bryant in short and Larry Pilkey at "the hot corner" will round out the infield. In the outfield, Bill Owen, Bill Bridge and Colin Wackett will chase 'down the long fly balls. Rick Evans will also see duty in the field and at the plate as DH. Coach Scott says he plans to keep the roster lean and trim this season by cuttting down on the number of players. Veteran "Bill St. John is moving into the coach's circle and he will see limited active duty when needed. The Eagles are in the tough A Division of the Oshawa loop and their main rival again this year will be the "cross town" Greenbank Gamblers, the OASA Intermediate "C" champs from 1986. Whenever Greenbank and Port Perry hook up, fans can expect to see tough, hard- nosed fastball as this keen rivalry goes back several years. Other teams in the A loop are Claremont Juniors, Oshawa Juniors, Soutffville, ACL. Whitby and an Oshawa senior squad. Port Perry had been expected to field a combined Midget-Junior - squad in the B Division, but these plans had to be scrapped over the weekend as there were not enough players. As for the new-look Eagles, they will take the field at Joe Fowler Park this Sunday afternoon (May 10) at 2:00 PM for a double header exhibition tilt against Whitby-ACL and will open regular season play at home on May 14 against the Oshawa Juniors.
