12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 12, 1987 A ¢ last week at Town Hall 1873. t Eo Jean Kennedy. who played the character Bloody Mary scolds radio operator Bob McCaffrey (Hugh Baird) during South Pacific The Scugog Choral Society has dohe it again' South Pacific, the Rogers and Hammerstein musical set on a small island in the Pacific Ocean, has attracted record crowds during the past three weeks with an estimated 1500 people attending the performances The musical, based on James A. Michener's novel "Tales of the South Pacific," tells the story about an American Navy base establish- ed on a small island in the Pacific during World War II and a Navy Nurse who falls in love with a widowed French plantation owner. The three-hour show is a real crowd pleaser and the cast and pro- duction staff are all to be commend- ed on an exceptionally fine performance. Special recognition should be given to those in lead roles although most of the cast carried out their rolés very capably. Leading lady Debbie DeJong, who played Nurse Nellie Forbush, was a pure delight in her role. After a very small part in the Choral Societies tion of My Fair Lady it was nice to see Deb- + bie get a chance at this major character lead rode Both her acting and singing skills were much ap- preciated by the capacity crowds each evening Another real crowd pleaser was Terry Paul who very capably hand} ed the part of Luther Billis a Navy schemer Terry's rough and gruff appearance made him a ver) believable character and he ap- peared to be a crowd favourite Fine performances were also given by cast leads Don Taylor who played the very likeable French widower Emile deBecque. Mr Taylor's rendition of "Some En- chanted Evening" was very enchan- ting and his mellow voice carried Record crowds for South Pacific show the tune off beautifully Bill Bagshaw as Lt. Joseph Cable and Jean Kennedy as Bloody Mary . were also very convincing in their parts and rounded out the leads in this enjoyable production. Credit must also go to Dr. Tom Millar and Nina Foxall who's ~ enggess hours of producing and directing South Pacific make the Scugog Choral Society a group to be reckoned with. Without their talent and dedication productions. like South Pacific would never reach the stage in Port Perry. Congratulations to everyone in- volved with South Pacific for giving your audiences another delightful production. Lt.
