Vanish Your Vehicle Day Scugog Township was challenged by Last week all you had to do was dress up in fitness duds. This week you'll have to put your motion where your sneakers is (er, are) Wednesday May 13, is Vanish Your Vehicle Day, the second in- stallment of special events leading up to Participaction Challenge Day May 27 The first installment, last Wednesday's Phantom Fitness Fashion Day, wasn't a whopping ". success, but enough people in. Scugog dressed up in their finest fitness fashions to make the event a go. Schools and businesses were par- ficularly enthusiastic. Harry Kiezebrink, principal of R.H. Cor- nish Public School, was dressed to the nine's in trendy fitness gear. The folks at the Royal and Commerce banks also rose to the occasion, in all manner of sneakers and sweats. Even restaurants like Hank's and Emiel's served customers coffee in suitable sportswear. It was an easy way to show en- thusiasm and commitment to up- coming ,Challenge Day, when everyone in Scugog (absolutely everyone) is invited to pledge fifteen minutes of activity (any activity that raises heartbeats--use your imagination! ). This Wednesday, Vanish Your ~ Vehicle Day, is a little tougher. Tomorrow, people throughout Scugog are encouraged to park their vehicles a block from work and walk the rest of the way. : If that is impossible, simply make a point of walking a block anytime during the day. Whether it's a walk down the main street at lunrchtime, Joyce Chatten, Marie Wilson, Carol Brown, Jea Rankin, Debbie Storms, Angela DeJong and Eleanor Zengelein. or a leisurely after-dinner stroll, get into the act. i The students and staff at Im- maculate Conception Catholic School, for example, will be doing a school walk during the day, and to make it even more interesting, - they've also declared Wednesday "Fun Sports Hat Day."" Look for the kids and adults too wearing ex- travagant hats while they let their sneakers do the walking. Maybe you can get fellow workmates, neighbours or club members to get together for a walk en masse. Be imaginative, because once again, the Roving Eye will be about town searching for people walking. If the Roving Eye spots you, you could win a special pin, or have your picture taken. And-if you are spot-' .ted, you are automatically nominated for Challenge Day's Fit- test People Contest (categories are Fittest Woman, Man and Family). If nominated, work hard to let your friends know. And on Challenge Day, when they call in to pledge their 15 minutes of activity - (the number for that day is 985-9761, or 985-We R Number 1!), they can also vote for you. The people with the most votes can win some nice prizes, so get out there and let your friends know you're nominated! The best part is, you don't have to look like Mr. Universe to win! : So'remember, this Wednesday, do a little walking. And get ready for next Wednes- day, May 20, when Queen Street, Port Perry will be closed off to make room for the Leapfrog Your ~ Way To Fitness Race! Various folks have formed teams, and will run leapfrog races up and - down the street, much to the delight of spectators. : _ The race will be the third and final installment of events leading up to Challenge Day on May 27, The Big Day, as it is becoming known. As most people know already, Well, the Phantom should be somewhat pleased. While not everyone in Scugog dressed up for the Phantom's Fitness Fashion Day last Wednes- day, miany people did make an honest attempt. Those who were dressed up and spotted by the Roving Eye (the per- son who stalked the township sear- ching for people participating), are now nominated for Challenge Day's Fittest People Contest. To vote for those nominated, all you have to do is complete 15 minutes of exercise on Challenge Day, May 27, phone it in or register it at the lakefront in Port Perry, and say who'd you like to vote for. The following are those who were spotted in action last Wednesday: Joe Halliwushka, Wendy Voelkel, Martha Volman, Jane Todd, Gwen Lundy, Linda Young. Heather King. Laurie Wilson. Lorraine Shoemaker, Cathy Ballingall, Judy Mitchell, Jovce Chatten. Marie Wilson, Carol Brown, Debbie Storms, Jean Rankin, Angela De- Jong. Eleanor Zengelein. Reta FPP PT YVVP TTT YYYTYYYYY YN Newcastle and Ajax, in the nation- wide Participaction Challenge Day On May 27, communities all over Canada will be° committing themselves to 15 minutes of activity: The community with the highest percentage of participants will be judged the "'fittest community in Canada," but each community has challenged or been challenged by other 'communities to make the stakes higher, and the day more interesting. To beat Ajax and Newcastle, all "Scugog has to do is come up with a higher percentage of participation than they do. Which should be easy, because as we all know, Scugog has infinitely more community spirit than Ajax and Newcastle put together. However, it would be a fatal mistake to rest on our laurels. If you say to yourself, why should I bother pledging 15 minutes of ac- tivity when others will do it for you, you're létting down everyone else in Scugog. To win, Scugog needs absolutely everyone to call in their 15 minutes of exercise. Everyone. Even one spoil sport will take away. from a hundred per cent participation rate. To make Challenge Day even more interesting, organizers have enlisted the Phantom to help plana myriad of special events, everything from a dance to a boat tug contest (watch for details next week). - What's more, since this isn't a fun-. 'draising event, Challenge Day costs nothing. Absolutely nothing. The 'whole idea is to promote fitness, . community. spirit and good old- fashioned fun. CFTO's Heartbeat camera crew will be on the scene to record Scugog's enthusiasm for the world to see, so let's show them how en-- thusiastic we really are. Scugog has heen Challenged.
