Selections, The Complete Men's Shop Winston Churchill's shop When Fred W. Churchill the "W" really does stand for Winston). decided late last year to open a new mens shop in Port Perry, he admits he didn't know very much about the clothing business. The Scugog Island resident had spent the last eight years in auto sales with a dealer in Ajax and before that he worked for Dominion Life Insurance in Ottawa. But when Greg's Mens Wear mov- ed out of Port Perry last year. Mr. | Churchill decided the time was Fight to set up business in this community. Two weeks ago, he finally opened the doors to "Selections, The Com- plete Mens Shop' on Queen Street and he told the Star his aim is to pro- vide good quality mens clothing at reasonable prices. And wherever possible, the clothing in his store will have a "made in Canada' label. "I think that's important especial- ly in a community like this," he stated. "People are looking for goods made in Canada." Starting a new business from scratch meant he had to be very careful in choosing sizes and col- ours. The last thing he wanted was to buy heavily in a certain line-arid then see the goods sitting on the shelf for a few months. "I have tried to stock selectively and with flexibility," he said. He has lined up suppliers who will ship quickly those "*hard to fit orders" for the stout buyer or the man who wears a shirt with extra long sleeves. On some items, he can guarantee delivery by courier r the next day. He is carrying a full range of suits, slacks, dress shirts, ties, shorts, and some very smart look- Ing sports wear in the latest styles and bright colours. He isnot carrying certain things like shoes or the exclusive ex- cessories like cologne or leather wallets and key cases. But he is hop- ing to bring in formal rentals for those special occasions. While his extensive working background in the auto and in- surance sales business has been helpful, Mr. Churchill says he's had a lot of good advice from a personal friend in Winchester, Ontario, (his home town) who has been in the mens clothing business for almost 20 years. He says there are a lot of similarities between Winchester (a Remember, you only have one mother! farming community near Ottawa) and Port Perry. Mr. Churchill, his wife Olga and their three daughters have lived in Scugog for about a year and they thoroughly enjoy the community Asked how he came up with the name "Selections,'" he says it was his wife's idea. He had been toying with the idea of calling the store Churchill's, but there is a store in Oshawa by the same name. Winston's he ruled out as too stuffy, and Frederick's was too cumbersome. When his wife sug- gested 'Selections,' he agreed that it was appropriate. "I'm trying to provide the customer with good selection and good quality in a reasonable middle of the road price range." he said. -Nestleton-Caesarea News by Mabel Cawker A Thought We are confident Mothers everywhere had a meaningful day on Sunday, May 10, surrounded by a loving family to make the day a "special" occasion.
