26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 2, 1987 The Greenbank Gamblers had a good week as they came out on top in a pair of tight ball games and moved into second place in the Oshawa City & District "A" Division. Top spot is still held by the undefeated Stouffville squad who continue to roll along behind the outstanding pitching of Jim Chilvers and John Annis. Last Monday night in Greenbank " Park the Gamblers Mark Goreski and Oshawa ACL ace Doug Spencer,' hooked up in a dandy pitchers duel which Mark Goreski and the Gamblers finally. won by a 2-1 score. Greenbank opened the scoring when George Redshaw singled in the second inning and came around to score on Rodd Real's long triple to centre field. This run held up until the top of the sixth inning when Rich Shoemaker hit a home run to tie the game. However, in the bottom of the sixth Terry Till led off the inning with a single and Don Beatons single put runners on first and third. George Redshaw drew an inten- tional base on balls and the go-ahead run scored on John Fosters ground ball fielders choice : Mark Goreski retired the Oshawa team in order in the seventh inning _ and Greenbank had a 2-1 victory. On Thursday night the Gamblers met the Port Perry XL Eagles in Port Perry Park with Ken Goreski and Lawrie Williams the opposing pitchers. Once again Greenbank opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inn- ing when John Foster tripled off the right field fence and Rodd Real followed with a triple down the right field line. Port Perry evened the score in their half of the fourth inning when Dave Dickson singled with. two out and came around to score on Jay Williams long dog NORCO Men's & Ladies' Gamblers jump to second place The scoring remained tied until the top of the seventh inning when Neil Rodd singled and was sacrific- ed to second by Terry Till. The speedy Rodd went to third on a wild pitch and scooted home on a pass- ed ball to give Greenbank a 2-1 lead. However, the Gamblers were not through yet and Don Beaton drew a base on balls and George Redshaw was safe on an infield error. John Foster cashed both runners with a triple to left and came in to score on Rodd Reals single and the Gamblers had a 5-1 lead. However, Port Perry fought back in the bottom of the seventh as Lawrie Williams doubled and scored on Rick Blohm's .fielders choice and the Eagles had the tieing run at the plate when Ken Goreski finally put out the fire and the final scope was 5-2. Don Beaton and Rodd Real had 3 hits each for Greenbank with John Foster contributing a pair-of triples. Neil Rodd, Trevor Till and George Redshaw completed the Gambler attack. Jay Williams led Port Perry with a pair of hits and Ken Bryant, Dave Dickson, Lawrie Williams, Bill Owen and Bill Bridge had one safe- ty each. ~. The Gambler. pitching and ~ defense have been excellent so far this young fastball season and the team has never given up more than two runs in a game. Mark Goreski, struck out seven Oshawa batters in the ACL game and Ken Goreski, fanned four Eagles in Port Perry. This week sees the Markham - Claremont Juniors in Greenbank Park on Monday and the Gamblers travel to Stouffville on Wednesday to tackle the red hot Stouffville nine.
