Perfect conditions for Canoe the Nonquon '87 Blessed with the best weather in a long time, more than 150 canoeists paddled in the 1987 version of Canoe the Nonquont held June 6. There were some new wrinkles in the event this year, most notably a shortening by about four miles of the course down the Nonquon to Lake - Scugog and the finish line at the Port Perry waterfront. The temperature was a comfortable 75 degrees and the lake portion of the course was calm as the top of a - billiard table. It was quite a sight to see the first canoes appear on the lake, the bright sun-light flashing off the paddles as the competitors dug in for the last mile or so to the finish line. SE . In the C2 racing class, Rene Boogemans of Kensall and John Hiley of Bracebridge zipped over the course to the bridge and back in 2:27:26, less than a minute ahead of Pete Harbocian and Ray Healey of Cameron, who were just 28 seconds behind. Local favourites Mike Freeman and Bill Hurst placed third in this class with a time of 2:34:04. First place canoe was awarded $100 cash, while $75 and $50 went to the next two finishers. ..
