$800 for flowers? Township council saved $800 Monday afternoon by deciding not to place an ad in a magazine which is hoping '"'to improve the en- vironment for manufacturing in - Durham Region." Councillors Yvonne Christie, Neil" McLaughlin and Don Cochrane voted against spending the money for the ad, while Howard Hall and Harvey Graham said they supported the idea. "If we (council) are going to spend $800 on anything let's spend it on some flowers to make the' Township look nicer," said coun- cillor Christie. The Durham Region Manufac- turing Association, chaired by Des Newman, is preparing a publication to plug Durham Region industries and to try to at- tract new industries to the Region. The Guide is slated for a wide distribution, including many foreign embassies. Scugog Township is apparently the only municipality of the eight in Durham to turn down the chance to buy ad space in the Guide. Grain Policy Surplus grain is a problem for American and Canadian farmers. Yet through government policy we buy and import grain from other 'countries while there are huge Surphiges of grain in Canada and the. ~ States. Imported grain is cheaper, SO - government policy .is to import 'while farmers go bankrupt; other businesses go under. Where is the common sense to it all? When farmers are allowed free access to markets there are spin-off "effects. The poor countries are ex- periencing starvation because of government policy. The unwill- ingness to support and protect the -. farmers. What's the motive to im- port cheaper grain from other coun- tries. This world is in need of change. Yours truly, Orval Wood, R.R.1, Port Perry.
