10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuésday, June 16, 1987 Carving a Canada Goose about to take-off was no easy task and it took Eugene Clarke about 250 hours to carve and paint this bird. One of the more popular species of birds be- ing carved is the Common Loon. Above are some of the members of the Birdseye Centre Club with their work. From left, Ray Webster, Roy Connel- ly. Terry Cane (left) enjoys his hobby of making wooden rocking horses, while Bob Walker makes cars and clocks. Eugene has been carving about four years. The Birdseye Centre Carvers Club 1s only in its infancy, being just over one year old, but already they are turning out World Class carvers The club was started in April of 1986 and since then many of their members have' competed in Na- tional and World Competitions. Just recently some of their members at- tended the World Bird Carving Championships held in Ocean City, Maryland and the club came back with six awards. According to Frank Hedges, president of the club, "we have a core of excellent carvers in this area.' And he stresses that the car- ving is not limited to birds. Two of their members, which now number about 40, Bob Walker, and Terry Cane are busy carving wooden clocks, cars and rocking horses The Birdseye Centre Carvers Club meets the second Tuesday of the month in the Prince Albert Com- munity Hall. Their meetings start at 7:00 p.m. and they welcome guests.
