July 1st promises to be an exciting day in Ashburn when we hold a Canada Day picnic to be held at Ashburn Park, sponsored by the Community Centre. 2:00 p.m. is starting time, beginning with the in- troduction of the H.F. Daw Nature Trail. Free hamburgers and hot dogs, with carnival games for all ages, contests, baseball, art ac- tivities and prizes galore Bring along picnic extras. The regular _eeting of the Eleanor Knight Group of the Women's Missionary Society ret at the home of Chrissie McKinney on Wednesday evening, June 3 with 12 ladies present. It was good to see an increase in our attendance. Jean MecEntyre conducted the worship part of the meeting with Lois Daw in charge of the study, continuing our studies on the cults. Lois led in the study of "'Edstern Meditation Cults" Our next meeting will be in September. Last Wednesday evening, Muriel Fisher was hostess for the Ladies Bible Class, with vice-president Florence Ashton convening the meeting. Aldine Wick read the scripture, with Margaret Davis leading in prayer. The meditation was titled *One Day at a Time." We all enjoyed singing one of the Bill Gaither songs "1 am Loved." Rose Heron told us the story of Peter's mother-in-law, one of the unnamed 'women of the Bible. Rose conducted by F Florence / Ashton was a contest on How well do w we Know our Church, which tested our obser- vation on some of the details of the interior of the church. Our hostess served us lovely refreshments. We meet again in Septeqnber. The iris show and general meeting of the Brooklin Horticultural Socie- ty was held at Burns Church Hall on Monday evening, June 8. With such damaging storms we have had of re- cent date, it was a difficult task for members to fill all classes in the Iris Section, as a result there was a ~ remarkable decrease in the number of entries. However, there was a total of 64 entries, which included other specimens and decorative classes. There were sonte beautiful entries of peonies which enhanced the show tables. Mary Housego won the prize for the best decorative, and I must say I was rather pleased that py tall bearded 'Mystique' won the' prize for best iris specimen. We had an excellent speaker in the person of Barbara Weese from the Ministry of Agriculture and . Food from Bowmanville. Her topic "Preserving the Crop' and shared with us some excellent tips on the subject, as well as giving us fact sheets and bodklets to take home with us. The Rose Show and general meeting will be on June 24 at Brooklin United Church Hall. The speaker will be a representative of Green Cross on "Pesticides and Herbicides." - Mrs. Margaret Strand from ~ Gimli. Manitoba is visiting with Ken Brown, and her grande hildren Cameron and Heather Harvey and Sandra Bath attend- ed the Godfrey Reunion with Bruce and Gail Barber of Brampton, and grandchildren Jacqueline and Rodney Stickwood of Sunderland. Leslie and John Bergstron are happy to announce the arrival of their son on June 11th weighing 9 Ibs. 1 ounce, a brother for Amy. Con- gratulations to the happy family. Bill and Bernice Gardner and Mrs. Irma Tripp attended the Touch of Scotland Day in Sunderland recently. Mr. Amold Ashton from Winnipeg visited with his parents a few days last week. Art and Eva Richardson have recently moved to Port Perry. We wish them much happiness in their new home There was a good attendance at morning worship last Sunday mor- * ning. Margaret Davis and Lindsay Death read the scripture lessons. Catherine Humphrey favoured us with a beautiful solo **'The Name of Jesus." Rev. McEntyre chose as his sermon title "Who are the True Believers?" with the text from St. Mark, chapter 9, verses 23 and 24. Sunday, June 28 will be a Berry Special Day at Burns. Guess you will just have to be there to find out what it is all about.
