"ROTARY CLUB of PORT PERRY - welcomes you to visit their GIANT YARD SALE SATURDAY, JUNE 20th at ... Philp Pontiac Buick a vic s LL, (rst / li ng It's a community effort The key word in Utica Communi: ty Day Care Centre Incorporated is Community Without the total support and hard work of everyone in the Utica area, thus soon-to-be-opened day care cen- tre' would not have got off the ground Although the core of workers is based around Utica United Church, many people in the community, adults and children alike, pitched in to make 'a dream come true." . The idea was voiced about a year ago, within the church, when members of the congregation ask- ed whether or not a day care centre would be feasible in Utica. A small task force was formed to investigate the suggestion, and the results of the study revealed there was a definite need for day care. Further investigation received support from both the Ministry of Community and Social Services and the United Church Council in Toron- to. Both organizations thought it was a great idea and eventually endow- ed the group with both ideas and _ money. However, all the funds for the pro- ject weren't so easily raised. People within the community worked hard at many projects to raise money, in-« cluding an auction, a "lose-a-thon'"' (where people lost weight and rais- ed money at the same time), hot dog sales, pie sales and a variety of other projects. Linda Irving and Denise Thorn, both members of the centre's Board - of Directors, were impressed and thankful for the support of people in the community and of the agencies that helped their idea become a reality. The centre will host a registration- open house week starting June 22, - when interested parents can look over the facilities and register. And then on June 29, the centre will open its doors, beginning regular hours from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. five days a week. Up until renovations were completed recent- ly for the centre, the church base- ment wasn't much more than a place for storage. The church had no bathroom facilities (except for an outhouse in the backyard), but had a kitchen with no appliances. There was no plumbing and Linda and Denise say the floor was rotted. In short, the basement needed a complete overhaul and now boasts a kitchen any homeowner would be envious of, laundry facilities, brand new drywall, clean floors, electricity, a piano, and most importantly, a bathroom. - Although contractors did some of the heavy work (like plumbing and electrical wiring), the Board of Directors and others in the com- munity did much of the work themselves. The basement is bright and clean, - needing only a group of children to make it complete. The backyard was also updated, with new fencing and shrubs. What's more, the church will also be able to make full use of the new facilities when the day care centre isn't open. Cindi Boutilier has been hired as | supervisor of the day care centre, and she comes to Utica from Whit- by with an impressive resume. As well as a degree in Early Childhood Education, she has two and a half years experience working in other day care centres. | She says she's looking forward to working in Utica and is thrilled to have taken an active role in the planning of the centre. BENEFIT FROM OVER 25 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE "Oh yes, it's really exciting,' she says. 'They've really involved me, and it's nice to be able to start off in a brand new facility." Now that the centre is almost open, Linda and Denise and the other nine directors can concentrate on running the business end of day care. '""'We have to operate in a businesslike manner but we also want to recognize the need to help rural mothers," Linda says. Rural moms, she points out, don't always need day care every day but could use a hand when it comes time for haying, or strawberry picking or whatever the demands of a pat- ticular farm are. One of the centre's most impor- tant mandates is looking after the rural parent's needs. The directogs are thrilled the cen- tre is almost open, and both Linda and Denise admit it was a lot of work, more than they bargained for. "We didn't realize when we tackl- ed the project that it would turn out to be as much work as it was," Lin- da says. Still, the results are obviously worth the effort. People in the Utica/Epsom area interested in more information about the centre can call 985-8783, as soon as the phone is hooked up. "It should be soon,"" Denise says with a grin. IT'S TIME!
