34 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 16, 1987 Impressive awards ceremony Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly An impressive Awards Ceremony was held on Sunday evening at the United Church for the Guiding Movement. Following the Proces- sional Hymn and the singing of O"Canada the Colours were presented to Mr. Glenn Larmer Father J. Lynch gave a prayer of Welcome. The Brownie and Guide groups held impressive "Fly-up' ceremonies Blackstock brownies Sarah Belanger, lori Boyce, Jennifer Clark, Melissa Moore and Heidi Obstfeld flew up as did Caesarea brownies Katie Mairs, Kim Headon, Ami Mathewson, Corynn Johns & Sarah Hutney. All Round Cords were presented to Alicia Bentley, Stacey Swain, Jennifer Byers. Bristol Sleep was ill and unable to be present to receive hers. Canada Cords, the highest award in Guiding were presented to Julie Byers and Jennifer Fletcher. Provincial Plaques were presented to Julie Byers and Jen- nifer Fletcher by Sam Cureatz, M.P P. Presentations were made by the Units, District Commissioner Fletéher, Division Commissioner Curtain and the parents to each of "the honoured girls. Presentations were made to four retiring leaders, nainely - J. Boyce, B. Bryant, C. Connelle and C. Mairs. Mrs. B. Sleep retiring treasurer and Special Courier was also presented with gifts as was retiring Commis- sioner Linda Fletcher. Everyone will be pleased to know that the new commissioner will be Joan Swain. Following the song "Let There Be Peace on Earth" Mr. Glenn Larmer gave the Benediction after which the "Brownie and Guide Prayers were said. The Colours were returned by Mr. Larmer, Taps were sung and the Colour Party left. A lovely reception was held in the Christian Education Building in honour of the six girls. Grand- mothers poured tea and coffee at the beautifully decorated tea table. A large crowd attended the annual Decoration Services at Union Cemetery Sunday afternoon. The grounds were beautifully decorated with flowers for the occasion. Port Perry Ont Mrs Eileen Price of Saskatoon, Sask. is visiting her daughter Wen- dy and David Bentley, Alicia & Gor- don. She was so pleased to be here to attend Alicia's Cord Ceremony Sunday evening Mr. and Mrs. Donald Walker of Regina, Sask. are visiting relatives in Ontario. They spent a couple of days with his nephew Gerald and Joyce Kelly and girls. The area has several members on the sick list. In Oshawa Hospital are Ivan Thompson who suffered a severe stroke and Neil Werry with pneumonia, and in Port Perry Ross Weir who also suffered a stroke. Ann Marlow spent some time in Barrie Hospital with complications from an appendicitis operation. Bet- ter health is wished for all these patients. Congratulations to Debbie Van- Camp who recently graduated from Durham College with Honours (on the Dean's List) in the 2 Year Business Programme majoring in Human Resource Management. Following the Graduation Exer- cises, Deb's sister Cindy and Den- nis Werry and boys of Kedron hosted a family buffet dinner in Deb's honour. Those attending were the honoured. guest with her escort Scott Howey, her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Percy VanCamp, her parents Keith and Wilma VanCamp, ~ brother Jay VanCamp and Kelly Hart, her uncle Merrill and Norma VanCamp, her aunt Aileen Van- "amp her friend Jacqueline Hayes with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hayes of Campbeliford. On June 9, twelve members of the afternoon unit of the U.C.W. met at Jean Churchill's lovely home by Lake Scugog for a picnic meeting. - We enjoyed a bountiful pot-luck lunch. In the absence of President Grace Hall, Jean Adams chaired the infor- 'mal meeting. Because Lisa Kristensen has moved to Oshawa, she was presented with a United Church coffee spoon. Several ladies gave interesting and humorous readings. The annual Sunday School An- niversary service was held at the United Church Sunday morning with Lois (VanCamp) McLeod as guest speaker. Various departments of the Sunday School sang and per- formed skits. Thanks to Barry Van- Camp for providing two beautiful baskets of flowers. . Doreen VanCamp demonstrated her Clown Ministry throughout the service. S.S. Superintendent Judy Gilbank participated in the service as well. On Tuesday evening at the Durham Board of Education Retire ment Dinner: at the Holiday Inn, Oshawa the three retiring teachers from C.C.P.S. received their gifts - Congratulations to Jessie Gunter, Kathleen Dorrell and Gwenyth Thompson. New members of the Twenty-Five Year Club (those who have worked for 25 years with the Board) of interest to this area were Jennifer Beal, who lives on Road 57, just east of the village, C.H.S. prin- cipal Jim Musselman, C.C.PS Principal, Roden Rutledge and former resident Wendy Hamilton Congratulations to you all. Mrs. Elsie Hooey, former resident brought an article about Don McLaughlin who is her nephew and who lived with the Hooey for many years. While here he was a member of the 1st Cartwright Scouts. He and his wife Theresa were presented with prestigious Medal of Merit Award for their serviceto Scouting. Many of this area will remember Don. Last Saturday, Richard and Ruby VanCamp, Lawrence, Brian and Jill, Mrs. Maragret VanCamp, Miss Doreen VanCamp attended the wed- ding of Louise VanCamp and Jeff Carroll in London. Congratulations and best wishes to Lousie and Jeff. ~-The evening unit of the U.C.W. met at the home of Carolyn Morton on Wednesday evening. Plans were made for convening a couple of wed- dings coming up this summer. There are still openings for Camp _ Quin-mo-lac Sept. 11-12th. Contact Marion Larmer if interested. Local babysitting can be arranged if needed. 'Tallya Moore introduced Bryan Watts of Webb Security Corpora- tion. He explained different alarm systems, gave pointers on preven- tion of robbery. It was all very in- teresting. Bryan is new to this area and was pleased to come to talk to the group. Cake and coffee brought the evening to a close. Next meeting not until September 16. On Friday evening a recital was held in the United Church by the students of Linda Kyte. Guest artist for the evening was Vernon Yorgasen who played two classical and two jazz selections that were greatly enjoyed. Students who took part in the programme were Kevin and Nicole Gibson, Jennifer Byers. Andrea Johns, Brandon Yorgasen. Derek and Bradley Malcolm on the organ, Jennifer Fletcher, Melissa Haines, Matthew Bradburn. Kevin. Lisa and Laura .Gilbank, Vanessa Sorley, Carolyn and Theresa Keddy. Jennifer Schillings, Frances Grove gave both a vocal and piang selec- tion, Stacey Swain, Rosemary Michelle on the organ, Susan Kyte, Laurie Swain, Heather Goulding. Jill VanCamp.
