Letters Need to communicate To The Editor: In response to the letter to the editor in the June 9 issue of the Port Perry Star regarding The Teenagers Without Drinking Pro- blems. We are very grateful for your letter and only hope that the parents of our Port Perry teens res- pond in the same numbers as you have. We understand that this was not a typical teen party but it (the first letter) was in no way an exag- geration, this being the first reported case; but not something to be ignored. Some of you know what this home looked like after the par- ty was over. The home that your parents own/rent is something that they have put their adult lives into. There are things in that home that can never be replaced (e.g. your baby pictures, your lock of baby hair, your {first art work from school, your first report card). If the parents of the children (age 13-16) were real- ly mean they could sue the owners of the home where they were drink-- ing and the owners of the home would end up with nothing for the rest of their lives. The home where you now live is your parents' permanent home; you will one day, in the near future, leave there to build a permanent 'home for yourself. You will then join the ranks of us who have the privilege of a mortgage, insurance and doing the best we can at this time to give to the family that is the centre of it all. Putting yourself in- to those shoes how would you feel if your personal property was defiled: by a group of people you neither know nor invited into your home. The laws in the sixties were more strict than they are now and our seniors did not provide booze for juniors as seems to be the thing to do in this generation. Drugs and drinking have always been a part of our society, but like you, not all of us made use of these potentially dangerous drugs: alcohol being a drug with addictive qualities. This group of "Concerned Parents' is not out to do away with parties or dances, nor out to convert the world. We think it is time that with our combined knowledge and support of one another we may be more able to enjoy your teen years "than critize them. If the parents understand the hows and whys of their teens a lot of your parties could be happy memories, not heavy with guilt as many of our juniors suffer from now. Set record To The Editor: I would like to point out a miistake in the Port Perry Star, June 2, 1987, concerning the accident involving the Region truck and gravel truck on Regional Rd. 21. The wording in the Star makes it sound as though the Region truck driver was at fault, when it was in fact a mistake on the gravel truck drivers part. He came Why should your parties be crash ed by a bunch of juniors who get out of hand? Why do you have to see that they get home or to the home of a friend? Why do you have to clean up their damage and vont" If indeed you are not part of this mayhem why are you the ones that will be charged if one of these juniors die of alcohol-poisoning? The "Concerned Parents of Port Perry" are concerned about you. Our information night on June 18 at 8:00 p.m. at the Anglican Church Hall is for parents to help us to understand and communicate with our young people and to work out a way to be part of the healing and to see if we can find solutions that will -make both groups happy. We of the "Concerned Parents" realize that the older teens have sprouted their wings and now have to make their own choices b&they good or bad. We are finding also that our young teens (13-16) are not mak- ing trustworthy choices for themselves and are thus suffering the remorse and guilt that go along 'with it. They have not learned that "no" can be an acceptable and respected answer. They seem to want to be seniors before their time. Not all of our juniors are involved in this desire but it seems that we have morg than a healthy share in this town. We love all our teens and because we are older, we are wiser and know that what you do now can affect the ~ whole of your adult life. You teens are so right to say that there is a lack of communication between some parents and teens. It is the things that the young teens are do- ing behind our backs that worries us. When we were young we had a feeling that it (jail, injury or death) would never happen to us but we know that it can. Maybe now both age groups can see the view of the other group and find a way to make Port Perry a town of caring and get rid of the bad name of 'Port Perry the Party Town." Each year *the age group of our new drinkers will be younger at this rate. Would you bring your children up in this town" Would you stand by and let it go on? Do you think a child of nine or ten can make a decision of this kind knowing what he or she is really doing? touch. Yours truly, Concerned Parents of Port Perry. straight out across onto the Region truck drivers side of the road, endanger- ing the Region truck driver, who was at No Fault Whatsoever. I would appreciate it if you could clear this up in next week's paper. - Thank-you for your co-operation, Julie Midgley, Greenbank, Ont. Problems of concern To The Editor: The following are some of the things the people of Port Perry, Scugog Township and Durham Region are concerned about. 1./ Why the Region of Durham have not reconstructed Regional Rd. No. 2 (Oshawa Road) from Union Ave. and Lorne St. to Vaned- ward Dr. with curb and gutter, and a left turn centre lane. The vehicles leaving Apple Valley area week days from 6 a.m. - 9 a.m. is 300 per day 2. Why Scugog Township has not constructed a proper sidewalk on the west side of (the Oshawa Rd.) Regional Rd. No.2 from Adva St. to Major St. Do these two projects + need a petition signed by the area people to get these done? They shall you know. 3. Vehicles still going the wrong way in the two lanes at the Port Perry Post Office 4. People who use the left front wheel of their vehicle on the yellow (Turn to page 15) Please keep talking: keep in ps v BLISTER CJC RESISTANT / FAST DRYING a 4 LITRE 4 = SALE PRICE 24 a -- = - ' a ------- pred 2 Shel Te rec ; i 3 Gel-Flo alt salle --. @ i on, ALL PURPOSE EXTERIOR PRIMER 4 LITRE SALE PRICE F S =~ BN FOR WOOD OR ALUMINUM v" DURABLE LATEX ~ GELLED HI-HIDING GLOSS ALKYD EXTRA DURABLE 4 LITRE 4 UTRE SALE PRICE SALE PRICE (EASILY APPLIED FOR MASONRY STUCCO & CONCRETE 4 LITRE SALE PRICE Glidden Stain Redwood, Walnut .... gal 11 99 Driveway Sealer 17-1. pail , 8.99 Driveway Cold Patch '20 kg. bag ........... 4.95 PATIO SLABS Del.
