28 -- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 23, 1987 Greenbank Pee Wees win the Consolation On June 20 the Greenbank Pee Weé¢ All Stars travelled to Guelph to participate in their first tournament of the year. The team was 'roaring to go and wanted to bring a cham pronship home and did by winning the Consolation in a well fought game against Aurora Game | The first game of the day was against a team from Shallow Lake near Owen Sound. Our boys seem: ed tired at first and fell to a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning and then 6-0 in the 3rd. Greenbank had had enough of trailing and started to fight back in the top of the fourth, when Mark Shepherd hit a double and was driven home by Brett Puckrin's hit to center field Ken Winslow then received a walk and stole second and Puckrin camé home on the throw to make the score 6-2 for Shallow Lake Shallow Lake was then shut down in the fourth by 3 strikeouts from Greenbank 's reliever Brett Puckrin_ This resulted in Greenbank coming to the bat again in the fifth with another comeback This ime it was Barclay Phoenix taking a walk John Chronis took a single and then the 'big guy Mark Shepherd blasted a homerun making the score 6-5 for Shallow Lake - Shallow Lake then got two more runs in the fifth to make the score 8-5 Greenbank came at Shallow Lake again when John Ennis hit a single, Barclay Phoenix received a walk and then powerhouse Mark Shepherd banged them home with a double to make the score 8-7 for Shallow Lake Greenbank could not get any - more and so were defeated by the score of 8-7 which put them in the consolation side of the tourney Game 2 In the semi-final round, Green * bank came up against a team from Galt near Cambridge To start Greenbank off John Chronis bang- ed in a homerun to put Greenbank in the lead 10 Galt then came right back with 2 of their own to take the lead 2-1 In the top of the second Green bank started off with a homerun from Brett Puckrin to tie the game up 2-2. Ken Winslow then received a walk followed by beautiful hits from Tim Timms and Danny Slug- gett To keep things alive Barclay Phoenix and John Chronis drove a couple in the field as well as Mark Shepherd and Brett Puckrin. Green bank was finally put down but were now up 7-2 Scoring took place all throughout the game but the final score was 10-7 for Greenbank If not for Green bank's great defence they might have lost the gante but it turned out for the best. Barclay Phoenix made some beautiful catches in the field as well as Chris Donnelly and Mark . Shepherd. Peter Loughran did some great work retrieving balls in the field that looked like homeruns In the infield Ken Winslow and John Chronis made some beautiful plays to save the game. Dan Slug- gett played a great game on first and John Ennis pitched a great game with Tim Timms doing a super job behind the plate David Donner Ae made the game winning catch with 2 men on base, to put Greenbank in the consolation final Game 3 In this game Greenbank came up against a teagn from Aurora to try and win the consolation championship. Greenbank proved to be the best "team and won 4-3. Aurora scored first in the top of the third giving them the lead 1-0. Greenbank then was not about to : sit down and lose and came back with 4 runs in the fourth. John Chronis started things off with a single and then was driven home by Mark Shepherd's hit. Brett Puckrin pumped one into the field scoring Mark Shepherd. Tim Timms did the same as he knocked Brett in to Squirt H.L. action On June 16, the Squirt Boys Soft- ball game was a nail biter with Cart- wright Lioness earning the win by a score of 14 to 13 over Norm's General Contracting. Jeff Vernon went 3 for 3 at the plate for the Lioness while David Pashley pitch- ed for 3 solid innings. Even though Norm's General Contracting had to play short hand- ed, they made it interesting with Kevin Stewart going 2 for 3 at the plate including a 2 run homer while 'Rob Romano went 2 for 3 including a triple. On June 17, the game between Norton's Home Improvements and Irwin Smith Music was another close one with Norton's Home Im- provements winning by a score of 8 to 7. Steve Desautels pitched 4 great in- nings, allowing only one run for Nor- ton's Home Improvements while Brent Harper and Dave Bourgeois each hit twice scoring 2 and : runs respectively . For Irwin Smith Music, Kevin Pearce pitched 2 good innings, allowing only 2 runs but one was a homerun hit to the fence by Steve Parish. David Holt went 2 for 2 at the plate scoring one run while Sean Gawley caught a high fly ball in right field and Jeremy Luke snagg- ed a line drive at third base. In Seagrave XL Eagles tied McTaggart's Electric at 13 in the top - . of the 5th inning. For XL Eagles Jay Mackie hit a triple with 3 RBI's and stole third base in a cloud of dust while Gary Norton hit a homerun. 'For McTaggart's Electric, Troy Ridley hit a homerun with 3 RBI's and Patrick Beckem made 2 good catches in the field. In Nestleton, Taylor's Gulf sound- ly beat Brian's Towing by a score of 17 to 6 with Bill Zaparanuik pitching 4 innings and striking out 7 batters. lan Shrigley got 2 strike outs during one inning of pitching and Jeremy Geer caught well behind the plate for 2 innings for Taylor's Gulf Centre. For Brian's Towning, Ian McClelland pitched 3 good innings with 5 strike outs and got 2 good hits while at bat and Steve Stiles had one _good hit driving | in a run. Rut it wasn't over yet! Dan Sluggett then drove in Tim with a great hit to third base and then running his heart out to first. Thus, the score remained 4-1 until the sixth when Aurora got 2 runs but pot enough to win the game. The little hamlet of Green- bank defeated the town of Aurora to capture the consolation championship! John Chronis was selected to par- ticipate in the Golden Glove com- petition and represented the team extremely well John competed against boys from Bramalea and Unionville, these teams being rank- ed high. John was still in the com- petition when they were defeated. A boy from Aurora won the competi- tion. John however, won most sport- ° smanlike of the tournament. The boys put forth a great effort throughout the day and represented Greenbank very well. The coaching staff should be con- gratulated for their efforts also, as well as the fans who supported the team throughout the whole day Thank-you.
