Complimenting the parish and its pastor Father Tom Lynch on its rapid growth, Bishop Doyle said "The strength of faith and influx of newcomers into this area has encouraged the Diocese to found this, its newest parish to meet the pastoral needs of Catholics in the Cartwright area." In the summer of 1986, Father Tom Lynch, pastor of St. Thomas - Moore parish of Cavan and Manvers Townships, was asked to establish a mission parish in the Cartwright area. After looking for several places to hold Mass and assessing the needs of Catholics in the area, St. Bernadette's Parish started with its first Mass, the First Sunday of Advent, Nov. 29, 1986. Said Father Tom Lynch "It was a fitting time to begin since Advent is the start of the new Church year." From 40 people that first Sunday, the size of the congregation has grown steadily. Each Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Catholics gather to put up chairs, set up an altar, distribute hymn books from cardboard boxes and greet new parishioners to prepare for Mass.
