REPPIN TE ve C8 a A First pastoral visit June 28th PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 7, 1987 -- 41 Catholic parish formed in Cartwright area "Make your parish a home to welcome the new, the stranger and the old." With these words, Bishop James Doyle of the Diocese of Peter- borough began his first pastoral visit to the Parish of St. Bernadette in Nestleton on Sunday, June 28th. Complimenting the parish and its pastor Father Tom Lynch on its rapid growth, Bishop Doyle said "The strength of faith and influx of newcomers into this area has encouraged the Diocese to found this, its newest parish to meet the pastoral needs of Catholics in the Cartwright area." In the summer of 1986, Father Tom Lynch, pastor of St. Thomas - Moore parish of Cavan and Manvers Townships, was asked to establish a mission parish in the Cartwright area. After looking for several places to hold Mass and assessing the needs of Catholics in the area, St. Bernadette's Parish started with its first Mass, the First Sunday of Advent, Nov. 29, 1986. Said Father Tom Lynch "It was a fitting time to begin since Advent is the start of the new Church year." From 40 people that first Sunday, the size of the congregation has grown steadily. Each Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Catholics gather to put up chairs, set up an altar, distribute hymn books from cardboard boxes and greet new parishioners to prepare for Mass. Though it may seen rather im- promptu, this activity is binding together the parish, says R. Hooge- veen, president of the Catholic Improve your home equity! CLARKE BROS. ""lveryone has a job and knows they are an essential part of our parish family." Though the surroundings are somewhat bare, the enthusiasm makes up for it. The C.W.L. was formed in April. All of these several months of ac- tivity paid off for Bishop Doyle's visit. Such a pastoral visit is the acknowledgement that a parish is well established. At the end of the Mass, the Bishop departed with a special blessing. When asked about future plans, he laughed and said 'There are always future plans." To further celebrate, the parish had its first parish picnic at the Donau-Schwaben Park. An after- noon of swimming, games, egg races and tosses was capped off with barbecues and snacks.
