Port Gator first baseman Dave Burnett made a valiant effort to stretch for. the throw on this play, but it arrived too late to get XL Eagle $950 in prize money. Greenbank settled for second spot and $350 while the two other teams to reach the semi finals, Tomlinson of Rich- mond Hill and the Port Perry XL Eagles earned $200 each for their efforts. Oshawa Juniors won the consola- tion over Claremont and took away ~ $150 in "travelling money." This was the 14th year Port Perry has been host to this fastball tour- nament which 'this year had 16 teams entered, four from the im- mediate Scugog Township area. Along with Greenbank and rival Port Perry XL Eagles, the other local teams were Nonquon Travel and the Port Gators, a group of younger players pulled together for this tournament. In the final game between Cold Springs and the Gamblers, Cat pit- cher Roger Cole tossed a four hitter at the Gamblers, giving up just one run in the early innings. It was the fourth victory in the tournament for the ageless Cole and he managed to finish the game despite some shoulder problems in the late inn- ings. For the Gamblers, Randy Underwood started the final and Mark Goreski came on in early "relief and then went the distance. They allowed the Cats just six hits in this one. The final game was tied at one each going into the bottom of the 5th inning when the Cats went ahead for good on a long triple followed by a perfect sacrifice fly to deep centre field. The Gamblers Trevor Till at first base made a great stabbing catch of a line drive to end the inn- ing and prevent another run for the Cats. Greg Rodd gave his team a life with the final out on a great diving catch of sinking fly in centre field. The Gamblers had one last chance to even the score in the top of the 7th when Rod Real had an in- field hit with two out. Catcher Brian Hendrick showed a good eye to draw a walk and suddenly with runners on first and second the tying run was at the plate. But Cat pitcher Roger Cole was not to be denied the win as he dug down and fanned Terry Till for the final out. Several of the Cold Springs players are members of the 1980 On- tario Sr. A championship squad and their wealth of experience showed throughout the tournament. Cold Springs got into the final, thanks to a 7-1 win over the host XL Eagles. The Gamblers got to the final with a 4-3 victory over Tomlinson as Mark Goreski went the distance on the mound for the victory. The Eagles enjoyed victories over the Gators by a 6-3 count with Ken Irvine getting the win. They also defeated Greenbank earlier in the tournament 4-1 with the victory go- ing to Lawrie Williams. Enroute to the final, Greenbank Photos John nament ted Claremont 6-0, Oshawa Gippers 4-0 and Robinson by a score of 7-1. The Port Gators reached the semi finals with wins of 4-1 over Nonquon, and 7-0 over Labelle. Nonquon Travel came up with a couple of wins 2-1 over Labelle and 9-6 over Robinson Haulage before bowing out to Claremont 6-3 in the consola- tion round. The tournament was marred by inclement weather on Sunday which forced all but four games that day to be postponed. However, play resumed early on Monday and both diamonds were used to bring the games back on time. Organizers say they were a bit disappointed in the size of the crowds during the tournament, especially with four local teams entered. However, the final game Monday night between the Gamblers and the Cats was stan- ding room only at the south diamond at Port Perry's Fowler Park on the lakefront. Doug Scott, manager of the host XL Eagle team, told the Star after the tournament that there is a possibility the event next year may be split with one division open to the highest calibre teams in the pro- vince and another division for others. "We're thinking about this for next year," he said. . McClelland and J.
