Fifty-eight children, ranging in age from 8 to 15 attended this "camp"' each morning for 3 weeks. Even the humidity and high temperatures didn't take the edge off their enthusiasm. In the final week of the program, head instructor, Alex Pilepic of "Nevada Bob Sports' in Whitby, tested the kids skill level and award- ed badges: Beginner, Novice 1, Novice 2 & Intermediate 1. The badges, from Tennis Canada's "Performance Award Scheme' are a means of measuring the level of an individual's tennis ability and are diligently worked for by all the camp participants. Last week a high-level instructor, Stacey Allaster, from the governing tennis body, Ontario Tennis Associa- tion, who awards a monetary grant to junior programs of this caliber, gave local tennis players special in- structional clinic. She stated that the group of youngsters who attended the afternoon session were among the most accomplished she had come across in her travels around Ontario. Everyone was treated to Gatorade, caps and posters. Stacey also attended the Port Perry Tennis Club's Monday night adult mixed doubles league and demonstrated doubles strategy to each group of players throughout the evening. Her expertise and experience were evi- dent and appreciated. - The third week of the children's summer tennis program culminated in tournament play among the older children. Competition was keen and the general enthusiasm and concen- tration produced some exciting and unusual play! The region is trying to establish a "Junior Circuit" among Kawartha area clubs. The intention is to provide further playing experience for keen youngsters from the Port Perry, Lindsay, Peterborough, Fenelon Falls and Oshawa Tennis Clubs. the age categories are under 16, under 14, & under 12, for boys and girls. The dates, times and places for play are as follows: August 1 - Lind- say Tennis Club, August 15 - Peter- borough, No. 1 Nautilus, August 22 - Oshawa, August 29 - Fenelon Falls. Crestwood Golf Club pro teaches the game to kids A new concept of teaching took place at Crestwood Golf Club the first two weeks of July. Head Pro Bill Huestis donated his time for two golf camps for junior golfers ages 10 to 18 years. Each student paid a nominal fee for the day, and A&D Sales, Lindsay, Ontario were the sponsors. The juniors had three days of instruction on the driving range, the course itself and the put- ting green. The final day included several competitions with the following winners: Week 1: Jr. Short Game- 1t- Duane Empringham, Port Perry; 2nd- Brad Rowland, Oshawa. . Mixed Two-Ball A field of 60 players teed off at Crestwood Golf Club in hot, humid weather for their annual Mixed Two-Bal. The course played tough being in excellent condition and the pond by the new first green presented some new challenges. The 68 golfers teed off in humid 104 degree weather hoping to palce in the top 11 and take the prestigious walk to the well-stocked prize table.
