Both championship games were decided by one goal as Newmarket defeated Whitby 1-0 in the Atom final and Markham ousted Whitby by the same score in the exciting Mosquito final. But on Sunday in the semi- final the local Atom boys just miss- MINI DIVISION Action continued in the Mini Divi- sion last week with two well played games. In the first game Ted E. Bears got by Port Perry Auto 4-1. Goal scorers for Ted E. Bears were Jennifer Hammond with two, and singles going to Sean Jeffreys and Mark Kuiken. Scoring for Port Perry Auto was Katie Stephenson. = In the other game, Port Perry go Star edged Gord Lewis Motors 2-1. Scoring for Port Perry Star were = Jeff Ashton and Jason Gunn with Stephen Nagy scoring the lone goal + for Gord Lewis. SQUIRT DIVISION In the Squirt Division, Kinsmen took on Lake Scugog Lumber last week. Again, Shane Norton came through with a four goal perfor- mance as Kinsmen came out on top 4-1. Scoring for Lake Scugog was The Port Perry XL Eagles edged the MCL Juniors 6-5 in nine innings on Tuesday night in Oshawa to in- crease their lead over the Juniors for third place in league play. The Eagles started quickly as lead off batter Colin Wackett reach- ed first on an error and Rob Evans walked and Jay Williams doubled to "= score two runs. In the third inning : Port increased their lead to 5-0 on Wackett's double, Evans' walk and Larry Pilkey's long homerun to left field. Starting pitcher Ken Irvine kept the Juniors in check for five innings giving up two hits before being relieved by Paul Graham. Im- mediately the direction of the game changed as the Oshawa squad jumped on Graham for two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to innings. Leading off the ninth inning, Port's Bill Owen launched a rocket to left field to give Port a 6-5 lead with three outs to go. Graham con- tinued to struggle and was relieved by Irvine. With runners on second and third with nobody out. Irvine got the three required outs on a force at the plate and two fly balls to preleave the victory. The Port Perry Mosquitos spon- sored by Dennis Anderson Chev- Olds ran up against a very smooth squad from Whitby in the opening game, but they improved their play considerably in game two before losing out to Brampton by a score of 4-1. When all the competition was completed on Sunday afternoon, Scugog councillor Lawrence Malcolm and Durham East MPP Sam Cureatz were on hand to pre- sent trophies and medals to the finalists. Organizers were » complimented many times on the condition of the fields and the high quality of refereeing for this tournament and it is hoped that next year this House League Select tournament will at- tract eight teams in each division. ATOM DIVISON In the Atom Division last week, two very entertaining games were played. On Tuesday, R&S Leather led by three goals from Sandy Mark got by Prestige Hair 3-0. The game was well played by both. teams, and a lot closer than the score indicates. On Wednesday, Denny Metals playing with only eight players, put up a brave fight, and were reward- .ed with a 1-1 tie against Prestige Hair. After Kevin Hobbs had given Prestige a 1-0 lead early in the se- cond half, Denny Metals efforts paid off when Matt Pheonix scored from the penalty spot late in the game to tie the score. Eagles edge Juniors 0.A.S.A. playdowns begin Mon- day night in Greenbank with the return game in Port Perry Thurs- day night at 8:30 p.m. The best of three series should be a good one as both teams are evenly matched. Greenbank are the current in- termediate 'C' Ontario champs. On Sunday, August 16 at 2 p.m. the XL Eagles play an exhibition game against the California Cuties, a 4 man softball team from the United States. The format is to play the first half of the game seriously and the last half for laughs which they are quite good at. The game will be highly entertaining and fun for all. Proceeds will be donated to Port Perry Minor Softball.
