Not a snowball's chance A preliminary proposal to build 55 homes on estate residential lots south of the Shirley Road was tur- ned down flatly by Township coun- cil Monday afternoon. "This (proposal) does not have a snowball's chance in hell of getting my approval," stated Ward 1 councillor Yvonne Christie when planner Kevin Tunney presented the proposal to council Monday af- ternoon. The plan. called for 55 lots of about 1.25 acres on land on Con: cession 1, just east of the clubhouse of the Port Perry Snowmobile PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 11, 1987 -- 3 Club. Area councillor Harvey Graham expressed strong reservations about the location of the proposed development, noting the area is heavily wooded and this past spring was hit by a forest fire that could have had disastrous con- sequences. "The threat of fire in that area - can't be taken lightly. The road ac- cess is poor and I can't cupport this', he stated. Similar sentiments were ex- pressed by Regional councillor Lawrence Malcolm who said this "is just not a good area for a housing development." Mr. Tunney responded to these comments from members of coun- cil by stating "I've heard what 1 didn't want to hear today, but I'm glad I heard it at this time,' before a lot of money was spent on detailed work for the project.
