The property has been used on and off for many years as an auto repair and body shop and to store junked cars, old tires and various other-automobile parts. A public meeting over the re- zoning application was held in the council chambers Monday after- noon, and Oshawa lawyer Myrna Lack represented 11 nearby property owners opposed to the zoning change. She said the residents she represents have concerns over possible contamination of well water, the use of cleaning materials, noise, and the fact the property is situated on a curve and a hill on a busy highway that is prone to severe weather con- ditions, especially in the winter. She said the residents are also concerned that expansion of the proposed business could lead to cars parked around the property. She also questioned whether the property has had continuous com- mercial use over the years, although she agreed that at times it has been used for repairing cars and trucks. The property was purchased this June by Jim Gibson who for the past three years operated his oil under-coating business from a garage on Water Street in Port Perry. His Water Street lease was not renewed when the garage was slated for demolition to make way for commercial development. ~ Lawyer Michael Fowler, representing Mr. Gibson, told members of council that his client (Turn to page 13) Refugee policy (From page 2) Canada seeking a better life," Mr. Lawrence says immigrants bring skills, expertise, investment funds - and a willingness to work at jobs which are not attractive to native Canadians. And all immigrants are customers who create an increased demand for Canadian goods and ser- vices, he says. { i At WN 2 AT Ai 1h % ; "in RG oy 8 3 10 Year ............. 9.39 15 Year ........... 11 249 CASH & CARRY PRICE ONLY .25¢ Bundle Delivery SQUARE EDGE RAILROAD TIES each 8.95 STONE CHIPS White 20 kg. bag ....... 4.25 CEDAR BASE - COPPER ROOF CUPOLAS each 189.95 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 11, 1987 -- 7 CARPET & FLOORING SALE PARAGON 'Rare Event' SAXONY CARPET _ Regular 18.95 sq.yd. 8. 05 NOW - including INSTALLATION & UNDERPAD sq.yd.
