26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 18, 1987 The lights went on at the Seagrave Community Park Saturday night, and what a beautiful sight it was. The baseball diamond at the park was awash in brilliant light for several exhibition slow-pitch games, and a large number of peo- ple from Seagrave and surrounding areas turned out to party and © celebrate the 'Dedication of the Lights." The installation of the first class lighting system for the ball diamond and park was the result of a lot of hard work, dedication and effort on the part of many people, including members of the Seagrave Parks Board and other citizens who chip- ped in with money and volunteer labour for this project. The system consists of six stan- dards and 22 lights, and they make night baseball not only a possibili- ty, but a real joy as the diamond is lit perfectly with no shadows or "blind spots' in even the farthest corners of the outfield. The cost of some $25,000 came from several sources: Scugog Township contributed some $10,000 over the past couple of years, Mariposa Township council chipped in $5,000 (a lot of the people who use the park live in Mariposa) and the Parks Board raised $10,000 through cash and volunteer labour to make the dream a reality. . He paid tribute to the efforts. of Brian McTaggart for his electrical expertise, Frank Vale for the use of the boom truck in installing and aligning the lights, members of the Park Board and thé people of the community. An official ribbon cutting ceremony took place with help from Scugog Mayor Jerry-Taylor, coun- cillors Lawrence Malcolm and Yvonne Christie, along with Mariposa Reeve Art Starr and Deputy-Reeve Doug Fish. Mr. Keene, 86, a member of the 1936 Seagrave fastball club was on hand, as were Morley Bruce and Cliff Short, two members of the first Parks Board in Seagrave some 30 years ago. Mr. Dempsey said that while the mens and ladies softball teams will be using the park under the lights for their games, the youngsters of the community will be beneficiaries as well. The lights will free up a lot - of diamond time during the day and early evenings for the kids teams. The four-acre community park in Seagrave consists of tennis courts, two baseball diamonds, a practise diamond, playground equipment for the children and a picnic shelter.
