Playing a round at the Crestwood Golf Club is like taking a leisurely stroll in the country. This nine hole course located near Sonya, north of Port Perry measures just over 5700 yards. It's demanding enough, but far from brutal or unrelenting. And, if our round last week is any indication, you won't need to be out there from dawn to dusk to get in the 18 holes. In fact, two of us last week, playing at a leisurely pace, scooted around in just about three hours for the 18. The course is not heavily bunkered and there is just one water hazard, a pond on the right of the first green. See story. a few 'mistakes' from which recovery is possible. Crestwood is a par 70 for the 18 (the course is rated at 65.5). Most of the par-fours are under 400 yards, and the longest holes on the course (the par-five 16th) measures 502 yards. The course is not the prover- bial "'back-breaker." The par three 3rd hole is a deman- ding test. At 212 yards, the golfer must hit a long iron or wood and negotiate a large tree in the middle of the fairway not too far from the front of the green. The green itself is two-tiered with fairly sharp slopes. Chip shots and pitches with short irons can be tricky. } Aside from the first green, which is under construction, I -found the greens at Crestwood to be in good condition. And they are not lightn- ing fast which means you can take a good run at a putt and the ball will hold the line nicely. Several of the holes have a com- pletely different look from the front and back nine tees. The 3rd, as I mentioned is a tough 212 yard par three, but as the 12th, the tees are 145 yards from the green and the angle eliminates the big trees from the tee shot. The 4th plays as a 390 par four, but as the 13th, the tees are back some 60 yards and it plays as a par five. The 8th hole is a par 4 at 265 yards, but as the 17th, the tees are pushed ahead, making it a good par three at just under 200 yards. This 17th hole is a tough one with two bunkers guarding the front of a small green. You'll do well to put your drive on the green. Although the tees and greens are watered at Crestwood, the fairways are not. But a local rule allows for an improved lie on your own fair- way. Taking advantage of this rule, I didn't find myself with a poor fair- way lie all round. For the past 11 years, the course has been owned and operated by Bill and Karen Huestis. Lessons and clinics are given by Bill on the practise fairway beside the clubhouse. There are about 160 members at Crestwood this year, compared with just 28 when he took over 11 years ago. The cost of a round is reasonable: $10 on weekdays and $11 on weekends. If you're just interested in nine holes, the cost is a couple of dollars less. There are reductions for students, "retirees," and on Thursdays, you can play nine holes for $2.99. The clubhouse is licenced with light lunches and dinners available. Crestwood is located at R.R. 1, Manilla, just a ten minute drive (via the Seagrave Road), north of Port Perry.
