Rn rm --msye $y ppntrrnrdre 2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 25, 1987 w» It was Joyce Kelly, in the Blackstock news, who advised peo- ple that they'd better attend this celebration of 100 years of postal service in her hometown village-- because they probably wouldn't be around to celebrate the bicentennial! Durham Northumberland M.P. Allan Lawrence reminded a small crowd of the very same thing, dur- ing the celebration Thursday mor- ning in front of the Blackstock Post Office. It was in the year 1887 that Blackstock took on its present name, and for 100 years, the people of this village have counted on the friendly service of those who work there. It seemed only fitting for the peo- ple of Blackstock to commemorate this special occasion, and they did so with speeches from local dignitaries, from representatives of Canada Post, and with large slices of cake and coffee. Ted Jasinski, manager of Canada Post's Oshawa zone, emceed for the morning's activities, and was also on hand to present Postmistress Jean Mahaffy with a congratulatory plaque. Mr. Lawrence also presented Many dignitaries were on hand to help celebrate 100 years of postal service in Blackstock, Thursday morning, including from left: Rev. Dale Davis, M.P. The M.P. also took the opportuni ty to reassure his constituents that he would do his utmost to preserve the local post office, in the face of Canada Post's plans to replace of- fices like Blackstock with super mailboxes. "I just want to say, come hell or high water, the rural delivery, at least in this area, will continue." he said, to applause. Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor echoed his comments by saying "Our rural mail service is very im. portant to our Township, and we hope our government feels the same way into the future. Rural post of- fices are a very important part of our community." Reverend Dale Davis, who also gave a brief speech, commented "On this centennial, I hope it is also a re-dedication of the postal cor- poration to strengthen community post offices here and around the country." As well as the brief ceremony, the post office will continue to celebrate by using a special dye to stamp let- ters with, marking Blackstock's centennial. NT L.L.B.O.
