A RTO Nol tad lca ch a Durham's finest On Friday night two of Durham's finest were honoured at The Police Awards Night Dinner in Oshawa's General W. Sikorski Polish Veterans Hall. Approximately 500 people attended to salute officers who had gone above and beyond the call of duty. Two local policemen were among the select few, including Constable Bob Wilson (left) who received his 20 year pin, and Constable Greg Heasman, who received a Commendation for the heroic rescue of a Honey's Corner girl from a well. The incident happened early this spring. 3 | yi \ Za It's not easy to do. Because you're either open for business or you're not. Area councillor Harvey Graham made the suggestion Monday after- noon, noting that there is a lot of con- gestion along the street directly in front of the school. "Making it (Alexander St.) one way would eliminate a lot of danger at the intersection" (with Old Scugog St.) said the councillor. Part of the problem is created by bus traffic in the afternoon moving west on Alexander while cars come east at the same time to pick up children at the front door of the school. The resolution adopted by council Monday afternoon calls for Alex- ander St. to be one-way westbound only from the corner of Mary Street to Old Scugog Street. Roads superintendent Ronn Mac- Donald told council he is a little con- cerned about snow plowing if the street is designated one-way. He said there is no way snow plow drivers would attempt to turn around on Alexander Street once kids start arriving for class in the morning. Could traffic lights be out of whack? What's going on with the traffic lights at the intersection of Queen and Lilla Streets in Port Perry? Ward 2 councillor Howard Hall thinks the lights are way out of whack and he wants Durham Region to do something about them. Councillor Hall said Monday afternoon that in the past few weeks, the green signal for north-south traf- fin an T illa Street has been lengthen- ed which means east-west traffic on Queen Street backs up. "There's something funny going on with those lights," he said. All You Can Eat 'BUFFET And he said that the pedestrian walk signal governing Queen Street doesn't give people very much time to get across the busy intersection. He wants the Region to take a look at that, too. STATIONERY Plain and Printed. Business/Personal PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 All new SALAD BAR = featuring 35 items FRIDAY, SAT., & SUN.
