Heartbreaker is lost in double overtime This past weekend, the Scugog Realty ReMax Lakers took part in the Uxbridge Black Hawk "Pow Wow' hockey tournament. In the opening game, the Lakers came out flying, to beat East Gwillimbury 8-0. Goal scorers were Rick Olaison, Carl Fitzgerald, Brian Norton, Ron Jeffrey, Mike Driscoll (2), Jim Beatty and Steve (Smoothie) Calder. Assists were 00 numerous to mention. Goaltender Pete Naumienko was awesome, - stopping all shots he faced. The second game was a hard fought battle with Bradford Golden Oldies, but the Lakers hung on for a 5-3 win. Goals were scored by Brian Norton (2), Mike Driscoll, Bob Lee and Ron (Hoofer) Jeffrey. Assists to Jim Beatty, Ken Smart (2), Ron Jeffrey, Mike Driscoll, Bubba McEachern, Brian Norton and Lee Steeves. In the third game, the Lakers were poor hosts to The Pride of Fun- dy, a Maritime Squad, frying the fishermen 11-3. Rick Olaison led the way with four goals, while other scorers were Hoofer Jeffrey, Ken (Cement Hands) Smart, Steve Sports Land Calder, Mike Driscoll, and Brian Norton with the hat trick. Assists to everybody who showed up. The championship game was played before a packed house who shunned the Blue Jays to watch the Lakers take on the fast skating over- sized Bradford team. The game featured end to end rushes, good defence and outstan- ding goaltending at both ends. The Lakers played with two regulars out of the line-up, and were gradually being worn down by the slick marsh men, but had managed to carry a 2-1 lead into the final minute of play. But with 21 seconds left on the clock, Bradford tied it to set up overtime. After double overtime periods and the score still knotted at 2, both teams were forced to pull their goaltenders to settle it. Bradford scored the winner at the 3 minute mark. Scoring for the Lakers were Mike Driscoll from Rick Olaison and Ken Smart, and Brian Norton on a pretty set-up from Steve Calder. Congratulations from the Lakers to the Uxbridge Black Hawks for once again putting on a first class tournament. 84 WATER ST.
