It's hard to swallow finance minister Mike Wilson's line that some belt tightening is needed to reduce the national debt when we turn around and shell out $31 million big ones for two conferences. One critic also noted that in the case of the francaphone nations conference, several of the countries attending are on Amnesty Inter- national's list of countries where human rights are routinely violated. It's comforting to think that while some tin-pot dictator was tuck- ing into the food and wine in Quebec City at taxpayer's expense, his cronies back home were wailing the tar out of political opponents in a rat-infested dungeon. Canada, at one time, had a fairly well deserved reputation as a mediator and peacemaker in international affairs. It was a role which cost a lot of tax dollars, but one in which the people of this country could point to with pride. Lavishing $31 million on two conferences is a far cry from that. When is this country going to stop being a patsy? When is somebody up there in Ottawa going to take a look at this kind of folly and say "hold on a minute?" When that happens, maybe, just maybe, the average taxpayer in Canada will not feel quite so cynical and hostile when the tax notice arrives.
