Public Health Nurses About 100 public health nurses with Durham Region are poised to go on strike later this month unless there is substantial improvements In contract talks. Elizabeth Calvin, spokesperson for the nurses who are employed by Durham Region, said Monday mor- ning that a strike mandate held recently was overwhelmingly in favour of that option should it become necessary. "We don't want to go out on strike. It would be a difficult position for us because a strike would not hurt the employer as much as it would hurt our clients," said Ms. Calvin. However, she said the nurses are angry at the lack of progress in con- tract talks with the Region and a strike is a distinct possibility. The nurses have been without a collec- tive agreement since the end of last year and wages are the main issue in efforts to sign a new contract. Ms. Calvin said that public health nurses, who are university educated, now earn about $2 an hour less than RN's employed in hospitals and about $1.50 less than their public health counterparts in other regional municipalities. They now earn between $14.03 and $16.51 per hour and Ms. Calvin said they are seeking wage parity with RN's in area hospitals. Working conditions and hours of work are also issues in the contract dispute. Negotiations between the two sides have broken off completely, said Ms. Calvin. There are four public health of- fices in Durham Region: Uxbridge, Bowmanville, Ajax and Oshawa. The nurses are involved in a varie- to strike , if necessary ty of community health programs such as home care, T.B. control, family planning clinics, nursing ser- vice to schools, immunization, pre- natal classes, home visiting for new mothers, support to Children Aid Society high risk visiting, psychiatric counselling and control for communicable and sexually transmitted disease. Council wants to meet with owner of Frank's Scugog Township council wants to meet with the owner of Frank's Restaurant in Caesarea before mak- ing a decision on whether to amend the zoning by-law to permit the restaurant to have live bands. Specifically, the council wants to find out if the owner, Sam Proven- zano, will agree to several changes to the restaurant such as the in- stallation of a 6" high privacy fence and air conditioning in the building so the doors can be kept shut to keep some of the noise inside. Frank's is seeking a re-zoning which would permit the establish- ment to bring in live bands. Under THANKSGIVING SPECIA 1 Reg. $10.00... At a public meeting in the coun- cil chambers September 28, several residents of Caesarea expressed strong reservations about the pro- posed zoning change on the grounds that live bands would generate too much noise for people who live nearby. The matter came up for discus- sion again at the O¢tober 5 meeting with council opting for a meeting with the owner to see if he is willing to make some changes. Area councillor Harvey Graham said at the meeting Monday that if the Township turns down the re- zoning, the problem of noise won't get any better. He suggested the meeting with Mr. Provenzano and lawyer Gary Valcour who is representing Frank's in this matter. With an agreement in place to help control noise levels, councillor Graham said "it will be a better situation than if we turn down the (re-zoning)."
