House League Hockey The parking lot was dark, and the arena was cold and quiet. It was the - beginning of the 1987-88 season for Port Perry Minor Hockey House Leagues. The first puck was dropped at 6:30 a.m. for the first Pee Wee teams. In the first game those wide eyed parents, coaches, referees and con- venor saw Scala Brothers facing off against Larocque Electric. This game started off very quick- ly with lots of hustle by both teams. In the first period Mike Hepburn scored with Mark Cosway and Chris Bryant working hard on the play Kevin Ellis worked hard all game both forechecking and backcheck- ing. Mike Tripp played goal for Larocque and although he didn't have as much work as Robbie Romano for Scala, he did stop two breakaways. The second goal came in the third period and Mike Hep- burn got this one also. The third and final goal of the game was scored by Shannon Leslie unassisted. The score ended Larocque 3 - Scala 0 Pet show Children in Port Perry, don't forget the stuffed animal 'Pet Show," coming up in October at the Scugog Library. GAME TWO The second game of the morning saw Emiels & Consumers Gas going to battle. The score in this game was Emiels 8 - Consumers 1. This was a good game although the score didn't show it. Greg Rankin played well in net for Kmiels stopping many shots and allowed only 1 goal against his team. Blair Beverage led the scor- ing for Emiels with 4 goals and 1 assist. Blair made the most of his many opportunities and showed lots of hustle all game. Also scoring for Emiels was Chad Venning 2 goals and 2 assists, Aron Royle with 1 goal and 1 assist, Jason Dunkley 1 goal, and Adam McTaggart, and Rob Brown both picking up an assist. The Emiels team played well in 'only their first game. Wade Sheedy stood up bravely in net time after time. NOVICE HOUSE LEAGUE The first games in the Novice House League were played last Saturday at the Scugog Arena. The league consists of four teams this year, with sponsors being David's Hairstyling, Port Perry Printing, ReMax Realty, and Van Camp Con- tracting. About fifty, eight & nine year olds make up the teams. Game 1 ReMax Realty 3 Port Perry Printing 1 In this game ReMax jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and then hung on for the victory. Justin Halligan, Robbie Murphy. and Nicholas Kutlik had the ReMax godls, assists going to Ryan Diceman and Robert Gracie. Brad Shanley had the Printers goal, assisted by Bobby Cracknell. Game 2 Davids Hairstyling 4 Van Camp Contracting 1 This game was scoreless until the 9 minute mark of the second period, when Davids jumped out in front. They finished out the scoring as well, with a pair of goals in the last two minutes of the game. Blayne Kinnunen, Matt Koetje, Colin Outram, and Glenn McCready all scored singles, with assists to Seth Gray. Derek Jansen, and Justin Kowalaczyk Kevin Hobbs replied for Van Camp. assisted by Matt Philhps The big green machine, the Port Perry Malmont Farms Atom All- Stars, is an institution and a dream for many Port Perry Minor Hockey players. Last year they were On- tario Champions. This year, it's a brand new team with the exception of two excellent players, Scott Heasman and Mike Pashley. After gruelling try-outs, anxious moments and hard work the selected team commenced their season with an impressive 5-1 win in Pickering over Pickering Village. Any thoughts of an easy victory were quickly erased as this Picker- ing team was fast, big and smooth. Speed, excellent checking, good defense and strong goaltending made for an action-packed game. Late in the second period, the games first goal was, scored by Brent Harper with Kenton LeFort and Brett Lawson assisting. The big green machine applied constant pressure in the third period. Neil Mueller scored two goals with Brent Harper assisting. The Joey Broad- There was a lot of excitement among the boys and parents of the Novice No. 1 team as they prepared for their 1st exhibition game of the season in Bowmanville on the weekend. Even though the boys took a loss they showed enthusiasm and great effort. They were good plays displayed by the forwards and the defence as well as some great saves by Brandon Hammond and Mike Morden. The J.T. Pearce Auctioneers for the 1987-88 season are: No. 1 -- Mike Morden, No. 2 -- Jason Logan, No. 3 -- Timmy Fitzpatrick, No. 4 -- -McEnaney, No. 30 -- Machine Atoms open with victories worth, David Bourgeois and Jeremy Geer line applied hard forechecking with David driving a shot for the goal with Joey and Jeremy assisting. The Chad Kearns, Jay Tredway, Mike Labanovich line were not to be outdone. Jay scored a pretty goal after some hard work by Chad and Mike. Pickering's on- ly goal came in the third period on a penalty shot. Good solid defense was provided by Scott Heasman, Jay King, Andrew Jones, Clay Scott, Brett Lawson and Jeremy Norton. Mike Pashley and Steven Gilbert played well and will provide real strength throughout the season. The previous night, Malmont tangled with Oshawa Canadians in an exhibition game in Port Perry. A solid team effort led by excellent goaltending resulted in a 4-2 Mal- mont victory. This writer is convinced there will be excellent minor hockey in Port Perry this season. Fans are en- couraged to come out, and en- courage our young people playing Canada's national sport. Tennis Racket This is the time of year every ten- ms player dreads to see. The weather is unpredictable and much cooler, the days are shorter and its time to take the windscreens down. However, the Port Perry Tennis Club members cannot complain as we've had one terrific year. Now. on to report about our last big tournament of the season - the Singles Tournament! After the in- itial lack of co-operation from the weatherman, we were able to con- clude this tournament on September 26th. Although the weather was cool, the tennis action was certainly 'hot and heavy.' Both womens and mens final matches went the distance as Beth Charles overcame Winnie Tobin and Jay Neill came back to defeat Ken Elliott, Congratulations to Beth and Jay!! On the consolation side, Lesley Allin defeated Jan Barton in the womens final. On the mens side, Brad Bigglestone defeated Dick Martin Both of these matches were of the straight sets variety. Con. gratulations Lesley and Brad Our annual dance. the Tennis Ball, is being held at Skyloft Ski and Country Club on October 24, 1987.
