First game for the MoJacks had to be cancelled The Port Perry MoJacks were slated to open their Central Junior C Hockey season October 8 with a game in Port Hope against the Panthers. But the game was cancelled because the Port Hope Panther ex- ecutive decided to fold the club for this season at least. Panther manager Marty Brereton told the Star later in the week that the decision to dis-band the club was a tough one to make for the nine man executive, but they felt it was the only option they had as the team simply was not able to come up with enough hockey players to be competitive. Brereton said that since the Pan- ther club is privately owned by the nine members of the executive, the philosophy has been to recruit players as much as possible from the immediate Port Hope area so that Port Hope fans would see local players in uniform when they at- tended games. He noted that this year in par- ticular the Minor Hockey system in Port Hope did not turn out many players capable of making the Junior C roster. There were just 15 Midget-age players in the system and 32 Bantam-age players. Despite the fact the Central Junior league changed the rules for Sunday hockey In game one Crandell's Riverboat out-shot Larocque Electric and went on to win by a score of 5-3. Scorers for Crandell's were Richie LeFort 2 goals, 1 assist, Ken Jeffrey 2 goals, and Dave Jackson 1 goal. Adding assists were Terry Rose 2, Mike Driscoll, Brian Burns, Carl Dur- ward, Doug Suppelsa, Steve Calder, and Ron Davis each with 1. Fighting back for Larocque were Dave Dickson 2 goals, 1 assist, and Doug Bache 1 goal. Other assists to Rick Brooker and Bruce Smith 1 each. Game two saw Norton's Home Improvements keep the winning streak alive by defeating Sportsland 5-1. Capitalizing for Norton's were Dave Mann 3 goals, Rob Evans 1 goal, 1 assist, Bill VanCamp 1 goal, 1 assist, Lee Steeves 2 assists, and Bob McEachern 1 assist. The lone marker for Sportsland was Dale Bronson from Scott Davis and Doug Brown. In game three Compton Cable T.V. managed to outskate and squeek one past J & D Carpentry 3-1. Scoring for Compton were Larry Page 1 goal, 2 assists, Wayne Fox 1 goal, 2 assists, John Robertson 1 goal, 1 assist, and Jim Beatty 1 assist. Helpigig out were Dan Horner 2 assists, Al Bon- ner, Ron Jeffrey and John Wood- ward 1 assist each. Attackers for Andersons were Bill Bridge 1 goal, 1 assist, D. He said the club likely would app- ly to the League for re-admission next season. There has been a Junior C club operating in Port Hope for nearly 25 years, and Brereton has been con- nected with it in one capacity or another for nearly 20 years. "We don't want people to get the idea we are dropping out of the League because we were facing a losing season. We just couldn't get enough players to ice a team," he told the Star. Brereton said that of last year's team, which went ot the semi-finals in divisional playoffs, nine players were eligible to return this season to form the nucleus of the squad. But three players decided to play in Bowmanville, two opted for Peter- borough, one went to Lakefield, one joined rival Cobourg Cougers and two local players just quit Junior C hockey altogether. The Panthers are limited in the area from'which they can draw players. Cobourg, which also has a Junior C club, is just five miles to the east and Bowmanville is to the west. However, up to this year, the team was not able to recruit in Bowmanville or Durham Region, unless the players were designated as imports. Brereton told the Star he feels other clubs in the Central Junior C league may feel the "player squeeze' in future years and he thinks the League is going to have to take a look at the present zone areas from which a team can' Blackstock wins again Goreski's won their first game of the season by beating Emmersons 2-1 with a goal in the first period by Dave Dickson from Tom Powell and in the second period by Joe Parkin- son from Bruce Woodrow. Emmersons fought back but were only able to tally one goal late in the second period by Karl Durham assisted by Bill Gerber. Blackstock won in overtime 2-1 over Oddfellows with Ron Wagg from Rick Bayard of Blackstock scoring in the first period. Odd- fellows tied it up in the second by Ken Harman assisted by Dale Lown. The winning goal came mid- way in the overtime period by Gord Bryans assisted by Dave Dalton. This tallies a three game winning streak for Blackstock. Utica extended their winning streak to three games with a 5-0 shutout over B & L Donuts. Goals coming from Chester Down with two, Ken Lynde with two, Bill Down with one and assists going to Bill Down, Mike Mitchell and Chester Down, with Mark Mason recording a shutout. a --ryy, TROPHIES & ENGRAVING Team Jackets & Uniforms Skate Sharpening Silk Screening done on Premises PINERIDGE SPORTS SHOP Queen Street - Port Perry J, PHONE 985-2839 § / hie i... iss PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, October 14, 1987 -- 23 recruit hockey players. Teams now are allowed to recruit players as non imports from within the Regional or County borders in which the community is located. Up to a couple of years ago, non imports could only come from within a cer- tain distance of the community. Players from outside were imports and each team was permitted just four import cards. However, the re-alignment of the zones for recruiting allows Port Perry, for example, to sign a player from anywhere in Durham Region, a huge area with a population of over 300,000 people, including the ci- ty of Oshawa. With the folding of the Panthers, it is not clear at this moment just what the Central Junior C league will do to fill in the schedule gaps. League officials and team General Managers were slated to meet ear- ly this week to discuss the situation. It is possible that the five teams in the Southern Division will play ex- Port Hope Jr. C team folds for this year tra games against each other to fill in the schedule. In the Northern Division, which includes the MoJacks, the Panthers had been scheduled for just two games (home and home) against the six teams in that Division this year. To make up those two games, the Northern Division teams may also end up playing extra games against each other. The Panthers had been slated to make their only appearance of the season in Port Perry on November 1. A decision on what to do with make-up games will be made prior to that date. The cancellation of the game in Port Hope October 8 means the Mo- Jacks won't play their first league game until Friday, October 16 when they make the long trip to Trenton.
