fi La Respected businessman Howard Forder dies suddenly at his home Funeral services were held today (Tuesday, October 20) for well known and respected businessman Howard Forder who died suddenly on Saturday morning at his home in Port Perry. Mr. Forder, 61, owned and operated a successful real estate business (Howard Forder Realtor) in Port Perry, a business he started in 1972. Born in Blackstock, Mr. Forder farmed in that area for about 15 years before going into real estate, first with an Oshawa firm and later as the manager of Walter Frank - Realty office in Port Perry until 1972 when he formed his own company. Mr. Forder worked hard in the real estate business and built a solid reputation in the community for his integrity and dedication to this profession. Over the years, he served on several committees with the Oshawa and District Real Estate Board. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Port Perry, active in the Port Perry Curling Club and was an elder in the Port Perry United Church. Mr. Forder rested at the Church for visitation on Sunday and Mon- day prior to the funeral service Tuesday morning, which was. followed by a private family service at Pine Grove Cemetery in Prince Albert. HOWARD FORDER Mr. Forder is survived by his wife Dorothy, who worked with him in the real estate business, and by four children, Brenda Marie, Brian, Brad, and Leslie Fay. His mother, Mrs. Charolette Byers, lives in Bowmanville. Mr. Forder has two brothers, Don and Harold, both of Port Perry, and three sisters, Lucille of Bowman- ville, Marilyn of Orono and Donna of London, Ontario. Zoning turned down The Scugog Township Committee of Adjustment has turned down a re- quest for a zoning variance to allow a non family member to work in a home occupation. The application had been made by Prestige Hair on MacDonald St. in Port Perry to allow a non family member to work in the beauty salon along with the owner of the business. The Committee of Adjustment heard both opposition and support for the zoning variance from residents in the area when the hear- ing was held October 13 in the municipal chambers. Scugog Township council was not in favour of the zoning variance. In fact, the Township council express- ed "strong" opposition to the variance describing 'it as a "dangerous precedent recognition of a commercial activity in a residential zone." A consultants report to be tabled this week for the Regional council comes to the conclusion that sites in either Oshawa or Whitby are equal- ly suitable for a new building. This conclusion by the Peat Mar- wick consulting firm differs from that of the Regional Chief Ad- ministrative Officer who suggested in a report earlier this year that the best site for a new building is one in downtown Oshawa, on land owned by the city at Mary and Bond Streets. However, the Peat Marwick report says that a proposal by Graywood Developments Ltd. to build the new building on Rossland Road, almost directly across the street from the present Durham HQ is equally as good as the Oshawa deal. The two alternatives (Oshawa or Whitby) "are sufficiently close that we do not believe it is appropriate to recommend one, rather than the other, on the basis of the analysis presented in the report," is the conclusion. The Regional council has been juggling this contentious issue over a new HQ building for the past several years. Politicians from both Oshawa and Whitby have been lob- bying hard to have the site in their respective municipalities, if Regional council ever gets around to approving a new building. It's estimated that the final cost to the Region for a building of some 170,000 square feet would be in the $22 million dollar range. One of the main arguments in favour of a new building is that cur- rently Durham Region leases office space for four major departments in both Oshawa and Whitby at a cost of over $1 million each year. The issue has been clouded by a claim by the City of Oshawa that it owns one-third of the present HQ building on Rossland Road in Whit- by, by virtue of a 1963 agreement between the City and the former County of Ontario. If the Region decides to build a new HQ anywhere but in Oshawa, the City has threatened to take the Region to court for what it claims is it's share of the present building, about $3.3 million. Oshawa has of- fered to waive this $3.3 million claim if the decision to build a new HQ favours the Oshawa location. The lengthy Peat Marwick report, which will be presented to council this Wednesday, essentially con- cludes that if the Region wants a new HQ building, the decision on where it's located will be settled in thegpolitical arena. Chamber Directors fo meet with developer Directors of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce will hear first- hand the proposals for a $25 million commercial, residential pro- ject on the Conway site from its developer Mr. Hans Moehring at a special meeting tonight (Tuesday). Mr. Moehring was invited to make the presentation after Directors of the Chamber felt they should discuss the impact on- the business community of the 90,000 square feet of commercial space he has proposed for the site. ; There are many business people in Port Perry who are very concerned about the large amount of space being suggested, and the Directors felt a special meeting was in order to try and get the facts straight. A spokesman for the Chamber suggested that if the directors felt it was necessary, they would hold a general meeting of the membership later to explain the project and inform them of im- pact on the community. o At present, it is not known if the Scugog Chamber of Com- merce will take a stand to either endorse or oppose the Conway Development Site as being proposed by Mr. Moehring.
