26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, October 27, 1987 Port Perry Star HT HH HN HHI REET II, Lda a 4 os a 4 Jr. MoJacks defeated in two close games by John B. McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks had their season record dip to .500 after losing a pair of weekend games, each by a single goal. On Friday night, the MoJacks had trouble getting on track on the small ice surface in the Wellington Arena as the Dukes scored in the final minute for a 3-2 win. Just a week ago, the MoJacks pinned a 9-3 loss on the'same Dukes. And, then Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks ran in- to un-defeated Lakefield Chiefs and came out on the short end of a 7-6 score in a tough, bruising contest. Three times the MoJacks enjoyed a lead in this game, but the hard skating and tough checking Chiefs showed why they have yet to suffer a loss in this young Central Junior C season. In front of a respectable crowd at the Scugog Arena (considering the final game of World Series) the game was only eight seconds old when Darren Nesbitt scored on the first shot that seemed to catch Chief goalie John Cole off guard. But that lead was short-lived as Chris Heffernan flipped a shot over Brian Tarleton just 34 seconds later. At 5:50, the MoJacks again took a lead on a very ptetty passing play with John Harman feeding Dean Smethurst in front of the Chief cage. Three minutes later, the MoJacks were up by a pair as Dave Burnett converted: passes from Len Giacalone and Kevin Long. + But the Chiefs took advantage of Port Perry penalties to score two quick ones from the stick of Heffer- nan and Scott Wainman. Late in the first, the MoJacks got their only power play goal of the game by Len Giacalone with help from Long and 'Burnett. The Mo- Jacks out-shot Lakefield 16-10 in the first. Scott Wainman tied the game at the 5:37 mark of the second with his second of the game and then at the mid-point, the MoJacks once again grabbed a lead when defenseman Chris Edmondson corralled a loose puck at the Chief line and fired low along the ice, which seemed to skip between the goalie's pads. The turning point in this one pro- bably came at 14:51 as the MoJacks were pressing on the power play. The Chiefs Dave Hughes grabbed a loose puck and raced in for a breakaway to beat Tarleton for a short-handed marker and to give his team the lead 6-5 for the first time. This was a tough, grinding period with just three penalties and the Chiefs seemed to enjoy the better of the play as they out-shot Port Perry 19-10. Early in the third Rop Baker had a chance to tie the game as he was sent in alone but he missed the net with a wrist shot. Some sloppy work in the MoJacks zone allowed the Chiefs to get four quick shots on Tarleton and one finally went by him at 9:22 as McMahon pulled the trigger for a 7-5 lead. With just under three minutes to go, Craig Menzies put his team back in the hunt when he pumped in a re- bound and the MoJacks had a great chance to salvage a tie when the Chiefs were penalized in the final two minutes. But the MoJacks power play sputtered at best and the Chiefs turned back any threats. This was a tough, hard-nosed game, but for the most part the teams stuck to hockey as the Mo- Jacks took nine minors and the Chiefs 11, along with a misconduct. The Chiefs effectively cut off the "MoJack attacks in the neutral zone, forcing numerous turn-overs and they made the most of their scoring chances. The Chiefs seemed to capture the momentum in the second half of the Pee Wee B's on a 7 game streak Last Monday the Stone Realty Pee Wee's travelled to Oakwood for an exhibition game against the fies- ty Oakwood team. For the first time this year Port ran into some stiff competition but still managed to prevail 4-3 against the tight check- Ing opposition. The boys jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Jeff Card and Jody Logan. Oakwood then tied the game before Logan regained the lead with a nice goal with only 1 second left in the second period. Once again Oakwood tied the game but Steve Desautels potted the winner to keep the boys' winning streak in tact. Brendon Agnew picked up 2 assists while Ken Winslow and Adam Johnston each pitched in with one. On Saturday night the Stone gang' hosted last year's league powerhouse from Bewdley and came away victorious by a 7-0 score. Port dominated this game from the opening faceoff. Whenéver Bewdley did have an opportunity, Steve Stiles made the big stop to earn his first shut-out of the year What was especially nice about this game was that the scoring was spread out evenly with 7 different players collecting goals. Picking up the goals for Port were Sean McEnaney, Adam Johnston, Steve Desautels, Jeff Card, Jody Logan, Ken Winslow and Brendon Agnew. Corey 'Bricknell, Darrell Vanderslagt, Jody Logan and Sean McEnaney all picked up 2 assists while Steve Desautels, Mike Slug- gett and Brendon Agnew added one. On Sunday Port travelled to Whit- by and extended their winning streak to 7 games with a 2-0 victory. Jody Logan scored the opening goal assisted by Mike Sluggett and Bren- don Agnew. The second goal was scored by Adam Johnston assisted by Steve Desautels and Sean -McEnaney. Goaltender Mathew Willetts was the hero of the day, as he made numerous stops in preser- ving his first shut-out of the year and the team's second in a row The boy's next game is Wednes- day in Manvers and they do not play at home this week due to Halloween game and were just a half-step of the MoJacks along the boards and in the corners. On Friday night in Wellington, the MoJacks were not able to get their power play on track to take advan- tage of a host of Duke penalties, especially in the thirZ period. It was not a banner weekend for the Port Perry MoJacks as they dropped a pair of Junior C games, each by a single goal. After losing 3-2 in the last minute to Wellington Friday night, the Darren Nesbitt and John Harman clicked for Port Perry. The game was knotted at 2-2 through the third period when the Dukes Scott Laven- dar scored an unassisted marker with just 14 seconds remaining to give his team the victory. The MoJack record now stands at 3 team ran into the tough Lakefield Chiefs at the Arm wrestlers pull thru On Saturday, October 17, 1987, in a tournament organized by Mike Haigh, and hosted and sponsored by CKLY 910 Radio and the York Tavern, Lindsay, local arm- wrestlers won the support of en- trants and spectators alike at the contest held at the York.
