40 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 3, 1987 Town Hall puppet show delight for adults "Puppets are not just for children!' That was the clear message delivered Saturday night to a delighted Town Hall 1873 au- dience -- mostly all adults. Master Marionettiste Daniel Llords of Llords International, with silky voice and flexible fingers, wove his particular brand of magic as he coaxed multitudes of brilliant- ly costumed creations through clever choreography. The familiar music of Stravinsky's Firebird Suite was the symphonic backdrop for Llords' original retelling of this Rus- sian folklore. Goodness, personified by the sweet flitting Firebird and Prince Ivan and his bride, triumphs over evil, the flameclad ogre Katschel. The spectacular finale to the Suite saw Llords' miniature world glowing in irridescent colours and dazzling special effects of jewelled 'stained glass' windows which framed the wedding scene. The puppet master's second offer- ing was a marvellous pastiche of dexterity. Especially notable was a clever spoof with a miniature Cute as a button, two young trick or treaters show off their outfits ---- 'Precious Hugs" and a kitty. strong effort On Sunday November 1, Port Perry 1.G A. Belles played host to a team from Markham in an exhibi- tion game Although being outscored by 7 to 4 the girls were certainly not badly outplayed. The defence played well breaking up plays in their game and moving the ring up the ice to our forwards. Missed passes and erratic shooting wasted some good scoring changes. This being only the second game for this team as a umt the coaching staff is not disappointed with their effort. The girls have proven to themselves that they will be com- petitive in this division of play. Scorers for Port were Michelle Ryan 3 goals, Jen Pelow 1 goal, 1 assist, Kim Caudle and Sherri Har- ris 1 assist each. The next game is against Markham at Milliken Mills at 7 p.m. November 7 See you there A special visit of well-known Veteran Missionary, REV. KENNETH PARISH GUATEMALA C.A. DON'T MISS THIS SPECIAL SERVICE -- ONE NIGHT ONLY This Sunday, November 8th at 7:00 PM Community Church - Caesarea Mozart (coughing, snuffing, then finally playing a gilded piano). The really unusual aspect was the equal- ly miniature Daniel Llords manipulating Mozart's strings, in turn being manipulated from above by the genuine article. Clever indeed! Another crowd pleaser was a hef- tily overbalanced soprano, over- dressed and over-done as well who, with the assistance of Mr. Llords, sang a falsetto solo. Witty and fun. These two segments and others ap- peared in a passage rightly titled 'Etudes for Two Hands' - variations on many themes. Part One concluded with a wonderful romp through Offen- bach's Paris 1890. The bejewelled Belle Epoch glittered again as dancers swirled, climaxing in the classic can-can, 'done Llords' way, of course. The show's second half consisted of a prolonged 'musical cartoon' -- Italia. It sparkled through a salute to Italy from Venice to Verona, Pisa to modern Milan, where man got 'munched,' losing a battle with machine. Another victim was disassembled by lions in a Roman arena and restored, finally drifting to heaven on golden wings. It drew hearty applause. In other vignettes a contemporary friar cycled a ver- tical highway, Vesuvius belched, Galileo consistently tested gravity, Nero fiddled before burning Rome, and a host of statues from mythology came to life behind a spectacular curtain of dancing water -- the genuine article. All these were set against a constantly changing backdrop of Italian sket- ches which clearly established each well-known locale. Everywhere Lloyds' deft touch, talent, worldliness, and whimsical humour were fully in evidence. His additional commentary served to link as well as explain each bewit- ching segment. And at the show's close, courteous to the last, Lloyds himself applauded his puppet performers. Lloyds' entire performance was all the more remarkable because he operated in view of the audience, and used both hands and feet to manipulate not only puppets, but many special effects such as lights, puffs of smoke, scene changes, even dancing waters and puppet transfor- mations. He was assisted only by Jones, his manager. In Lloyds' own closing comment, "We may have convinced you of one thing -- puppets are not just for children." You're right, Lloyds In- ternational -- but you did manage to tickle the child in all of us just one more time! It was an evening of en- thralling "tiny miracles." At intermission, current Town Hall 1873 chairperson Diane Lackie welcomed the audience to the new season and, assisted by vice- chairman David Sparling, presented outgoing program com- mittee leader Margaret VanCamp with a plaque and roses in honour of her lengthy and dedicated service programming Town Hall events. Pat Smith has now assumed this task. The upcoming Hall season was announced and Town Hall patrons were thanked for their ongoing support. December 5 will bring the joyful Christmas show 'Classical' Cabaret, which has something for everyone, and three highly energetic per- formers, plus pianist, to deliver it. (Don't let that 'Classical' fool you!) All this and a wine bar, too. Call 985-8900, or Irwin Smith, to secure your tickets. EE ol EN Before you send it, seal it... = with a Christmas Seal!
