McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks saved , the best for last as they chalked up two weekend victories in Central Junior C Hockey action. On Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks scored seven times in the third period to break a close game wide open for a 10-5 win over the Trenton Hawks. And the MoJacks enjoyed a strong third period Friday night in Lindsay as they scored three power play goals to put the Muskies on ice by a margin of 6-1. Coupled with a 7-7 draw Nov. 2 against the Cougers in Cobourg, the two weekend wins give the MoJacks six victories, one tie and two losses for 13 points and second place in the North Division of the Central League. On Friday night in Lindsay, the MoJacks spotted the home town team a 1-0 lead in the first minute of play, but that was all the Muskies could manage as Brian Tarleton stopped everything else thrown his way. Black was assessed a slashing minor, a five minute fighting major, a game misconduct, a minor for be- ing the aggressor, and a match penalty for pulling the face mask. Darren Nesbitt of the MoJacks rapped in two power play goals in the third and Kevin Long hit for another to cement this well deserv- ed win for Port Perry. The MoJacks were short-staffed for this one with several regulars attending the Com- mencement at PPHS, and Clair Cor- nish and Phil McBride, up from the Port Midgets, filled in admirably. On Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks got off to a Arena. The MoJacks took a 10-5 win after break- ing the game wide open in the final period with scrambly start as they spotted the visiting Trenton Hawks two early goals by Heffernan and Dafoe. Kevin Long got one back at the mid-point of the first and Dean Smethurst tucked home a back- hand at 13:22 to knot the game at two each. Dafoe put Trenton ahead 3-2 off a scramble early in the second before Chris Edmondson tied it again at 12:21 with a point shot on the power play. At 2:02 of the third, the Hawks took the lead for the third time as Heffernan scored on a partial breakaway after several MoJacks were caught up ice. Up to this point in the game, the MoJacks seemed to be enjoying a territorial margin in the play, but Trenton goaltender Steve Tufts was stopping all kinds of shots and the MoJacks were not especially sharp in the shooting department. But that changed just before the five minute mark in the third when Bob St. Jules scooted in front for a back-hand marker to even the game at 4-4. Then Dave Burnett rapped one in 15 seconds later off a scramble. And less than two minutes later, Thane Ellis gave the MoJacks a 6-4 lead as he showed plenty of drive to break into the Trenton zone. He drilled a perfect shot just under the cross bar on the glove side of goalie Steve Tufts. The goal by Ellis was probably the turning point in this affair as far as the MoJacks were concerned as Dean Smethurst made it 7-4 with a short-handed effort at 8:33, and Len Giacalone doubled the margin to 8-4 at 10:31 with a back-hand from the side of the crease. Trenton Zot its final goal of the game as Heffernan tipped a shot behind Tarleton. But the MoJacks were in no mood to let this game slip away as Greg Warriner clicked with a short-handed marker at 18:38 and Steve Ashby put his team into dou- ble digits with 37 seconds left, The game was fairly chippy with a couple of minor skirmishes. Although the score was close for bet- ter than two periods, the MoJacks had a big territorial advantage and they fired 53 shots against the Tren- ton net. Tarleton and Paul Goreski- shared the cage duties for the Mo- Jacks and faced 27 shots. Although he did not figure in the scoring, forward John Harman played an effective game for the MoJacks, while Kevin Long, Dean Smethurst and Craig Menzies con- tinue to impress with their drive and strong skating. Along the blue line, Dave Sims forced the Trenton for- wards to keep their heads up. After three tough games inside a week, the MoJacks will enjoy a week's rest as their next encounter is this Sunday evening (Nov. 15) when the Madoc Hurricanes visit the Scugog Arena for a 7:30 face-off. Madoc has struggled early in the season, so that team may be hungry for a victory. In other weekend Junior C action, the Bowmanville Eagles swept a pair of games from Little Britain and Uxbridge and Lakefield ran rough-shot over the Bruins with an 8-2 win Friday evening. Auctioneers reach 'A' final The Novice team had an exciting weekend as they entered their first tournament of the season in Oakwood. We came from behind to win our first game Friday evening against Oakwood. Scoring for Port were Jeff Clarke 1 goal, 1 assist, Tommy Chambers 1 goal, 1 assist, Daryl McEnaney 1 goal, 1 assist, Kevin Gray 1 goal, Brad Shanly 1 goal, Darryl Moase 1 goal, Todd Parry 1 goal, Jason Logan 1 assist and Kent Johnston 1 assist. On Saturday Port was matched up against an Oshawa Little N.H.L. - team and again came out with a vic- tory giving goals to Tim Fitzpatrick 1 goal, 1 assist, Kevin Gray 1 goal, Jeff Clarke 1 goal & Daryl McEnaney 1 goal and 1 assist to Tommy Chambers. . This second win earned the boys a spot in the "A" championship round played on Sunday afternoon against a Whitby Major team. Although the team took a loss, they played terrific hockey making the other team work for their goals. Mike Morden and Brandon Ham- mond made great saves in net steal- ing plenty of goals from the other team. Defensemen Jason Logan, Brad Morton, Mike Heasman and Jeff Clarke were an asset to our goaltenders. The team played great hockey on the weekend and they deserve a handshake. The coaches were pro- ud of their performance.
