8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 10, 1987 Editorial Comments (From page 4) all else that burning desire to see a better place for the province and people he so loved. Some English writers have condemned the fact that Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and other national leaders spoke so glow- ingly at his funeral, calling their words hypocritical. There has been the blunt suggestion that Rene Levesque was a traitor to Canada. Indeed, had the winds of fate blown slightly different seven years ago, he might very well have gone into history as the first president gf the Quebec republic, totally independent of the Canadian federation. Traitor? It's too easy and simplistic for non-Quebecois to slap that label on Rene Levesque. The very fact that some are using this label while others, including the Prime Minister are praising his con- tribution to a 'better, more tolerant Canada" is a measure of the presence he commanded on the Canadian stage. Rather than focus narrowly and dangerously on historical 'what ifs" or 'might have beens" we would do far better to remember him as a man of integrity, high ideals and a commitment to the democratic process and system. We may not have agreed with what he tried to do, but there is no quibbling with the way he tried to do it. ONE WOMAN'S VIEW by Chris Carlisle (From page 6) If Stevens doesn't mind going commercial, he could really make a go of this rice painting. Think of weddings where rice is thrown at the bride and groom. He could paint up a special mix of rice with a bride and groom on each grain--just for throwing. . And instead of those souvenir matches the bride and groom leave at their guests' places, or instead of pieces wedding cake wrapped in doilies with a little tag identifying the bride and gooom, Stevens could be commissioned to paint rice grains with similar information. "Forget the photographer. A really special wedding gift would be a commissioned portrait of the bride and groom on their special day--on the rice grain. With a grain of luck, Stevens could really make it big. Yesterday's Memories (From Page 5) 10 YEARS AGO Wednesday, November 9, 1977 While registration for a boy to join a Minor Hockey program in Port Perry is $45; a writer from Indianapolis says this is cheap as it costs $130 per player to join a league in the U.S.A. city. A lone gunman held up the Brewer's Retail store in Port Perry just before closing time Monday evening and made off with cash. No one was harmed in the incident. To save them from certain death, these geese were brought to the neighbourhood chicken coop, where they were cared for with the chickens and ducks and were free to roam. I watched these geese grow into magnificent birds as they spent many an hour in my backyard, bathing in my pond and following the children. Last week, one of these geese was brutally beaten over the head and killed while mine and several of the neighbourhood children watched. The police were called, but I am uncertain of the outcome. . This man apparently had a hun- ting license, but legal or not, I am disgusted and saddened that anyone could willfully kill one of God's defenseless creatures in this man- ner. These birds were tame and brought joy to many in the community. I know some people enjoy the "sport" of hunting, but to kill one of these birds the way this man did is inexcusable. I hope this person realizes what he has done and thinks twice before doing anything like this again. Yours truly, Mrs. Pauline Howel] Greenbank, Ontario Residents want sidewalks now (From page 5) safety no matter how many or few are involved. All we are asking for is a sidewalk from Major St., along Ontario St., to Alva St. We've been told several times that there is no money available in the budget for the last 2 years. We were then told that whomever built these houses should have replaced the old sidewalks, which must have been as old as this town itself. This seems to us that so- meone is passing the buck! I would like to think that we are wrong but little has been done to prove such. We would like to invite the proper offices to come and take a look at Don't Be A Slave To Hard Water! CAN YOU FIND YOUR PROBLEM HERE? TEST O Strange taste or odors in your drinking Xe our situation and then advise us fur- ther. Hopefully some satisfactory solution will be made, preferably a new sidewalk slated for the 1988 budget. As I am writing this letter, the snow is falling and our children are going to have to walk alongside the road. We are awaiting some reply, and remain, Yours truly, M.
