"We're having a tremendous amount of fun and racking up a lot of wins in the process,' says Mike Haigh, captain of Port Perry Arm- wrestling Team. "We definitely have a special team spirit and a 'one for all, all for one attitude," and it's getting us a lot of respect and recognition." This is evident as our town guys were the popular 'pullers' with the capacity crowd at '"'Champs" in Peterborough, in the process winn- ing yet another crop of trophies. Mike (sponsored by Schildt Machin- ing Ltd.) won First place (Lightweight Division), and was undefeated throughout the tourna- ment; Second place in this weight division went to another team member, Pat Mastrangelo. Wes Johnston finished with Second place in the heavyweight division, giving the local (last year's) defending champion, Joe Cadogan, a good run for his money. ¢ In the Middleweight category, Garth Carlson (sponsored by Wig- gans Landscaping) took Third place and Garth also won the coveted Most Sportsmanlike Competitor award, which is the highest compli- ment to any entrant. Mike was both PORT PERRY WADO KAI KARATE CLUB i Award winning Karate Club for all ages Economical and family rates Fun, Exercise, Self-Defense for the whole family Year-round SUNDAYS & TUESDAYS - 7 PM - LATCHAM CENTRE - Queen & Water Sts., at the Lake For more information call: (nse Rob Dods a0 I) OR Ron Mollon 985-7098 proud and slightly embarrassed that one of the team won this award as it has become their practice to donate the plaque to any event they enter. Several interesting personal mat- ches took place during the tourna- ment. Mike beat Pat to first place in their division, and now Pat has vowed he will 'one day' take the lead away from his trainer! The same applied to Wes in his matches against Joe Cadogan, who had also taken the first in the contest early in the year; Wes is determined to reverse this trend by the next (Spring, 1988) outing. Since the official formation of Port Perry's Armwrestling Team, it has become the most talked- about, effective and popular group; not only do they appear to be real crowd-pleasers, but they have, in the last three outings, won five firsts, eleven seconds, two thirds, two 'Overall Champion' titles and one Most Sportsmanlike Competitor. In forming the team, it was Mike's goal to elevate armwrestling to respectability, with the main aim being to have good, clean fun and competition. "You've got to have the right attitude' is Mike's motto; "We go out to meet people, enjoy the contest and learn as much as we can about the other guy's techniques. And we've got something really special going here; it's like we're all family and we all pull for each other, our sponsors and of course, getting the backing of the crowd doesn't hurt, either. The guys' parents are coming out to cheer us on too, now, and we've got them hooked on armwrestling too." The team can next be seen (hopefully in winning action) at "Gippers,"' Oshawa, Saturday, December 12. auto glass & trim 1a.
