Rt, awe 1s 8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 17, 1987 ONE WOMAN'S VIEW by Chris Carlisle (From page 6) like they used to. The modern ones just don't have staying power. They break down too easily and too soon. In an old manual toaster with its simple design, things really got cooking when you left the bread alone in there too long. And if part of the element burnt out, the rest kept on going, trying to do its job. Even if one side died completely, you could still cook the toast on the other. The old toasters never completely gave up. And even on half-power, things could still get red hot. I guess what modern marriages need are more repairmen. And more determination to maintain that staying power even when part is broken. A new appliance or a new spouse might look terrific, but they aren't the answer because there'll be problems with them too. Like an old toaster-and old-fashioned marriages--with a lifetime guarantee, one needs that longterm commitment and one just has to hang in there and keep trying, instead of pulling the plug and tossing. Random Jottings (From page 6) For my money, it's just too many dollars being squeez- ed out of the community for one project. Some good friends of mine who are on the organizing committee of the local Ducks Unlimited Dinner won't be too happy with this column, but it is nothing that I have not told them face to face over lunch. I admire these same people involved with DU for their dedication to the preservation of wetlands, etc.; for their organizational skills; their ability as fundraisers. I just am not convinced that Ducks Unlimited needs this 'kind of money .... especially from this small community. NY yo Fall i» $e \\q lf Specials: & sikkens & WALLPAPER 295 Ritson Rd. S., -- OSHAWA -- 434-3939 New record achieved as Ducks | Unlimited banquet raises $50,000 | Wetlands and their inhabitants were given a boost last week when the Port Perry and District Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, Canada raised over $60,000.00 (which will be ap- proximately $50,000.00 net after the cost of running the dinner) at its 3rd Annual Banquet and Auction. These funds will be forwarded to Ducks Unlimited head office in Winnipeg to be used for wetlands conserva- tion. This event was held in the Im- maculate Conception Parish Hall, Thursday, November 12th, 1987. Commenting on the event Co- chairman Bert Hutcheon said *'after our 1st dinner in 1985, when we achieved the highest raffle to at- tendee ratio in Ducks Unlimited Canada history, for a first time din- ner, and our 2nd dinner in 1986, when we raised the highest net dollars per attendee for any Chapter in Ontario, we were concerned about how we could live up to our past. Well we did! This year we rais- ed over $50,000.00 net and for our 1st three years we have raised almost $100,000.00 net of expenses for the .ducks. When it comes to supporting wetland and wildlife conservation, this community really turns it on." The top auction item this year was a 1987 Ducks Unlimited 50th An- niversary 12 gauge shotgun spon- sored by Fowler, Davies of Port Perry. It was knocked down- at $1,950.00. The second highest price was $1,535.00 for a decorative carv- ing of a green wing teal created and donated by Ron Lace of Oshawa. Two special raffles, a trip to Las Vegas donated by Nonquon Travel, and a 9.9 Johnson Outboard Motor donated by Port Perry Marina, brought $1,390.00 and $1,420.00 respectively. Many other fine gifts and sponsorships went to make this a very successful event. Hutcheon went on to praise and thank the com- munity for the merchandise, the financial sponsorships, the time, and the effort that they provided for this year's successful banquet. Hutcheon's comments and added, "this can only be viewed as a pro- mise to the future. Ducks Unlimited Canada's fund raising efforts have grown phenomenally during the 80's and they will continue to grow as the Ducks Unlimited raised over $60,000 last Thursday night at their annual Banquet at the Catholic Church Hall. Co-chairman - Bert Hutcheon, left, is shown here with Ted Hobbs of Oshawa who bid $1,950 for the DU 50th Anniversary of 12 gauge shotguns. His bid on the gun was the highest of the evenings auction sale. ott _ Art Philp of Ducks Unlimited presented Mayor Jerry Taylor with an award given to the Port Perry Chapter for being the top achievers in net dollars per attendee at the DU '86 Banquet. Mayor Taylor was instrumental in setting up the initial meetings to get the local Ducks Unlimited group started. The award was presented at the Provincial Conference in Peterborough on May 30, 1987.
