7 Bs 5 3 LS Committee undertakes ambitious project A set of working committees has been established by the citizens group interested in bringing a recreational facility to Scugog Township. The group of citizens held its se- cond meeting last Thursday evening in Port Perry, and like the initial meeting in October, much of the time was devoted to a discussion about what kind of faeilities are needed in the Township. It was generally agreed that Scugog Township needs an indoor swimming pool and a recreational facility in include such things as a running track, weight room, squash .and indoor tennis courts, and a room for aerobics and dancersize classes. The application for the building lot had been submitted by a property owner who has land fronting on Taunton Road, just west of the hamlet of Hampton. However, the application, was strongly opposed by mink farmer Gerhard Diefenbach who owns the Kiefer Ranch to the southeast. The mink farmer argued that if the building lot was created, it would effectively limit the arc of in- fluence at its present dimensions and would rule out further expan- sion of his mink ranching operation. The Region's planning depart- ment recommended against the creation of the residential lot on the grounds of the potential conflict bet- ween the property owner and the mink farmer's operations. The mink farm has been operating there since 1953 and has more than 2,000 mink for breeding purposes. The property owner reguesting the Official Plan amendment for the additional lot has already filed com- plaints about odours coming from the mink farm to the southeast, council was told last week. The group would welcome further input and support from interested citizens in Scugog Township who feel the municipality should be working to fitness/recreational facility in Scugog.
