A alin, "hl LE i 6 Girls from CHS win a thriller by Claire MacKenzie On Tuesday November 24, the C.C.P.S. gymnasium in Blackstock was the site of an exciting basket- ball game as the Cartwright High School Midget Girls team challeng- ed a team from Holy Cross School of Woodbridge for the DYSSAA Midget "A" Championship. This was a close, fast-paced game that kept everybody watching right up until the final buzzer. The CHS team steadily improved as the season progressed and they were at their best in this game. In the first half, Cartwright held an eight point lead that Holy Cross slowly erased. In the second half, the lead changed hands twice hut neither team could increase its lead to more than two points. As the seconds ticked away, Cart- wright held on to a two-point lead. At the final buzzer, however, Holy Cross was awarded a foul shot which gave them a chance to tie the game. Everyone held their breath and watched as the shot missed the basket and CHS was declared the champion. Final score: Cartwright 8, Holy Cross 26. Three wins for Pineridge Atoms The Pineridge Sports Atom No. 2 team had a busy week resulting in 3 Big wins. Goals for Port Perry 19 - against 5. Tuesday we travelled to Brooklin to play an exhibition game against -a team from Whitby resulting in a score of Port Perry 6 - Whitby 1. The score was 6 - 0 until the last 2 minutes when Whitby scored on only their sixth shot on net. Goal scorers for the game were Ricky Olaisen 2, (both shorthand- ed), Ian Shrigley, Ian McCready, Jeff Vernon and Greg Thompson 1 each. Assists went to Ryan Williams, Matt Morris, Graham Holt, lan Shrigley and Ricky Olaisen. Both goalteli®¥fs had a farily easy night with James Paterson receiv- ing only 3 shots on net and Scot Prechitko 4. Ricky Olaisen was doing some fine stick handling in scoring on his own rebound also Greg Thompson and Jeff Vernon both blasting the puck from the blue line to score were some of the highlights of this game. A very special mention to Ian Shrigley who now carries a momen- to of the game -- the imprint of the end of a hockey stick on his stomach. On Friday night the boys played their league game against Newcas- tle. The Pineridge Sports team was determined to do well remembering their previous loss to Newcastle and they came out strong! Ricky Olaisen scored assisted by 4 -Graham Holt and Richie Tripp in the first 20 seconds. The team never looked back as all the goals were scored on good pass- ing and good forechecking. Port Perry's second goal was scored by lan McCready assisted by Craig Laird and Kent Taylor. Craig and Kent teamed up again and made a fine pass to Jeff Vernon who then blasted the puck from the blue line to put Port ahead 3-0. The last goal for Port was scored in the second period when Graham Holt got a rebound shot from Richie Tripp and popped it into the net making the final score 4-0 for Port. As the game went on Scot Prechitko made back to back saves and the team as a whole should be proud of their fine efforts. On Saturday afternoon the Atom No. 2 team played at the Civic against the State Farm Canadians and came home victorious 9-2. The game was tied after the first four goals and then Port Perry went on a' scoring streak scoring 7 unanswered goals. It was heard through the crowd that the Oshawa goalie should sue for "lack of support." Scoring for Port were: Craig Laird 3 goals, 1 unassisted, Ricky Olaisen 3 goals, 1 unassisted, Graham Holt 1, Kent Taylor 1, and Matt Morris 1.
