Just when you thought it was safe to leave the lawn furniture on the lawn and the snowtires off the car -- Old Man Winter snows his way into town. This malicious Icon of ice and snow is a prankster with a pernicious sense of humour. Every year, his opening act is to flit about, sprinkling the huddled 'houses and shawling the trees with a frosting of spun-sugar snowflakes. Columbus is a Currier and Ives print -- the stuff of winter dreams. Then he plays "Twilight Zone," he gathers his storms, rages about madly, and throws us down into his winter nightmare. Every year we complain and grumble but nodoby ever shoots him We should start a *'Kill Winter Con- test," all the hunters around here would have a real challenge with this one, and we could probably get a considerable Government Grant. We could host a competition: wit- ches could cast spells, witch doctors could cast the bones, we could cast doubts and the non-believers could cast aspersions. Fun for all! Let's go for it! Speaking of casting spells, The County Town Singers will be creating an old-fashioned Christmas spell for us on Dec. 11th at 8 p.m, in the Columbus United Church. This widely-acclaimed group is celebrating its Twentieth Anniver- sary this year. Not bad for a group that put its talent into the hands of an accountant! Jim Ashley was that accountant. Both he, and his vivacious wife Joanne, who ac- cepted the job of Public Relations for the group, have devoted their time and energies to the group. Under Jim's guidance as musical director, the group sang its way to fame. He accounted for himself. Don't miss this performance -- it's a tribute not only to Christmas, but also to the durability of the spirit and the joy of accomplishment. Marg Webber knows about that durability. She is still the *'tem- porary' accompanist. She just slips this in between teaching music, ac- companying the St. Mark's Church Choir and accompanying and direc- ting the Whitby Rotary Men's Choir, so she has lots of time nn her hands! (Do you ever sleep or eat?) Thanks for all you're doing. If we were all like you, the world, indeed, would be a far better place. Tasha, our pup, is discovering the dangers of the ice-slicked snow we've been graced with. She came flying out of the back door-did a complete flip and landed flat on her face. A few comic pratfalls later, she resorted to prancing around on tip-toe, and growling at me as if 1 caused this mess. Still, one of the most beautiful incidents in my garden of memories, occurred one. . l PLUMBING CONTRACTORS BOB GOODMAN PLUMBING R.R. 3, Port Perry 985-7758 New Installations - Repairs Rebuild All Types of Water Pumps Older Homes - Our Specialty CALL TODAY FOR "FREE ESTIMATES & FAST NEIGHBOURLY SERVICE MAGNETIC SIGNS For Trucks, Cars, etc. PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 MISCELLANEOUS =] SAV [eo] --f- 1 BASSETT'S SMALL ENGINES -- REPAIRS TO -- Outboards - Tillers - Lawnmowers Snowmobiles - Chainsaws - Fibreglass Repairs - Sun Valley, Seagrave 985-8677 = DUNCAN'S DON CORNEIL Auctioneering Services ALL TYPES OF AUCTION SALES Auction Barn Facilities & Pickups R.R.1, LITTLE BRITAIN Call (705) 786-2183 CLARENCE WILLCOCK WELDING Shop & Mobile Fab. & Repairs PHONE 985-2589 HOUSE CLEANING & HOME SERVICES For further information & free estimates call Rose Ann 985-2795 REPAIRS TO ALL MAKES Washers - Dryers Stoves Fridges - Dishwashers - Freézers BUY -- SELL -- TRADE EMMER INSURANCE BROKERS LIMITED 193 QUEEN 8T., PORT PERRY, ONT. The moon broke free of a cloud and kissed the world with a gentle glow. The snow, delicate as a lover's sigh, shivered with delight and came to life. The moonlight, reflected and refracted by the snowflakes, was shot back in sharp blue, white, red, green and gold lances of light. Before me lay acres of diamonds the brilliance of which has never, in my opinion, been equalled by the gem. 1 really haven't been impressed by diamonds since. But, sapphires, Oh Yeah! My thanks to Mr. Walter Beath, who called to inform us about the County Town Singers. Nice to hear from you, Sir. I don't think I have met you, but you are not unknown to my family.
