Council split down the middle Variety store turned down Members of council had to wrestle with their concience on Monday morning when they tackled the issue of whether or not lo pass a by-law allowing Central 7 10 operate a retail/convenience store at their location on Durham Road 8 and Simcoe Street north. After some heavy debate, with opinions ranging from strongly in favour to strongly against the pro- posal, the motion to pass a by- law was defeated by a tie vote. The recorded vote had council- lors Harvey Graham, Lawrence Malcolm and Mayor Jerry Taylor voting yes to the by-law, while councillors Don Cochrane, Neil McLaughlin and Howard Hall were opposed. Councillor Yvonne Christie, who is a member of the board of Central 7 declared a conflict and left the room prior 10 the discus- sion and vote. In citing his opposition to the by-law to allow the convenience store, councillor McLaughlin said that if anyone from a Macs or Beckers had walked through the door with this proposal, it would have been turned down flat, "The people up in that arca do not want a convenience store, they indicated that very strongly when one was proposed just cast ol this one about a year ago" he said. He was refering to the proposal about a year ago on the Brooks property when the council cham- bers were filled with people from Cawkers Creck and area in oppo- Sion 10 a convenience store in the north end of the town. Councillor Graham, who was strongly in favour of the proposal said he could not understand why council would oppose this usc."l see no problem with this propo- sal,-and it would be a good thing for Central 7", he said. "IU do absolutely no harm in that areca". But both councillors Hall and Cochrane disagreed with council- lor Graham, with Hall saying that he couldn't believe that there has been no opposition to the propo- sal after the the uprising against the same type ol convenience store just a year ago. Councillor Cochrane said he did not agree with Central 7 renting the business out to a Beckers or Macs Milk, and felt that the only benefit to Central 7 would be fi- nancial. "I just don't agree that a build- ing that has been financed by the More talk about Conway project ~ Although the size of the Con- way Development proposal may be causing councillors some prob- lems, it was obvious by their comments at council Monday, the majority of them arc basically in favour of the project. For over an hour councillors discussed the proposal to build 100 seniors apartments, 90 condo- miniums and a 60,000 sq. ft. in- door-mall on the ten-acre parcel of land on 7A highway, where Con- way Restaurant and the car wash are now operating. Developer Hans Mochring asked council last week to consider sell- ing three small pieces of land to the development company so they could have complete control of the land use in the area, and it was this along with traffic problems that council spent the most time discussing. In regards to the picces of land, two picces of which are road al- lowances, and the third, a triangu- lar picce of park land south of the baseball diamonds, council could not come to an agreement. But councillor Graham said that he didn't think that council should get too stuck on that small paece of land. "While the land may have no value (as it stands now) to the township, it could be of great vaule to the developers". Graham said that he was "pleased to sce what can be built on that site, and if selling the small triangle of land makes the project even better, and improves the appcarance, then we should consider selling it". But time and time again council came back to the traffic problems along 7A highway, and what could be done to improve the situ- ation, Councillor Yvonne Christie was 1insistant that she could not support or agree to anything on (Turn to page 18) SAVE "Tent Trailers "Travel Trailers Box Trailers and more!
