And when did it become as expensive as running a pro hockey team"? Since when did giving the "Right Thing" become more impor- tant than giving of yourself? In this mass hysteria to give have we forgotten that we are supposed to be celebrating what we were given over Two Thousand years ago" God gave us Jesus -- the First Christian -- His Chosen Son. That's what this celebration is about. We are supposed to be celebrating the greatest gift of all -- the gift of the birth of Jesus, the man who demonstrated the word of God -- the Christ -- even to the overcoming of death. This is Christmas. Now, I don't know about you, but when I'm in a mall where it feels like everyone else in the world decided to shop (at the same time), I'm certainly not thinking about the birth of Jesus. But, I do hear his name mentioned quite often by frustrated shoppers, and it certain- ly isn't in a tone of praise! Every huckster in the world wants a piece of the Christmas action, and we comply by shopping our hearts and our wallets out. Are We Hap- pier? I don't know. But, it sure was nice to see the look on Jennifer's face when her Uncle Wayne gave her Teddy Ruxpin last Christmas. He was charmed into buying her this bear. She smiled and asked him for it, and he said "'yes."" He had no idea of the cost of it until he went to buy it. (Ha, the power of a three year old over an adult who doesn't watch television!). She got the bear -- and we got to watch her fall in love. It was great! The first settlers here, brought with them the tradi- tion of the Church being a strong force and an active part of their lives. This tradition is still alive in Columbus. The church is open to groups, clubs, and special events, as well as providing spiritual guidance to the community. One of these special events took place on Wednesday, Dec. 9th. Mrs. Gladys Dalby, Congrega- tional Secretary, and Past President | (1970-1971) has written a piece about this celebration and I will let her take over "Columbus United Church was beautifully decorated for the Yuletide Season which provided a perfect setting for the Anniversary Celebration of 25 years of UCW. Cor- sages were presented to all the Past Presidents, 23 in all. The Memory Corner included photos, clippings and the Secretary and Treasurer books. Willie Nesbitt president of Colum- bus/Raglan UCW introduced the Members of the Planning Commit- tee and guests at the Head Table. The pianist was Jean Le Grand of Centennial United Church, Oshawa and pianist of the UCW Presbyterial. (Suzanne Rutherford was otherwise occupied. Con- gratulations!) The soloist was Marion Milnes. Mrs. Violet Moon of Raglan UCW who will be celebrating her 102nd birthday, cut the cake. Happy Bir- thday Mrs. Moon from all of us. Mrs. Olive Bell, from St. Mark's United Church, Whitby and first President of UCW Presbyterial was guest speaker. She congratulated the Raglan/Columbus UCW on their very fine work in the past 25 years. Many former residents from far and near returned to Columbus for this memorable 25th Anniversary Celebration. Prince Albert and Columbus Choirs will present a Candlelight Senior Citizens Club by Marion Webster The Senior Citizens met on Wednesday December 9 at 2:00 p.m. with a large attendance. The presi- dent, Clara Warren opened the meeting with O'Canada. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. There will be no euchre on Wednesday December 16 as this is our Christmas dinner and the caterers wish to set up in the after- noon. Do not forget your parcel for the box for Operation Scugog. The hopping a contact sport Service in Columbus United Church on Sunday, December 20th, at 7:30 p.m. The Annual Christmas Eve Service will be held at 7 p.m. on December 24th." Their beautiful voices raised in song that wafted over those assembled in a cloud of joy. What a great evening! The costumes were beautiful, the setting enchanting and the crowd appreciative. Thank you for a memorable evening of memories and laughter. We are really grateful to be in a community where Christian values are still strong, and unabashedly displayed. The Church fulfills its du- ty here. Tradition is important, especially at this time of year. It's so nice to be able to find it without being called a racist, and asked to remove the Nativity Scene from the front lawn, or asked not to sing carols, or do anything else that is Christian. In closing I would like to give you the Benediction that closed the ceremonies for the UCW 25th An- niversary Celebration: May the Love of God unite us, the Joy of God inspire us the Peace of God enfold us the Courage of God sustain us and the Blessing of God rest upon us and we turn to meet, in a strength not our own, all that the coming days hold of op- portunity. Country Chords busy The Country Chords would like to wish the residents of Scugog a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We have had a busy year since our move to Port Perry from Cann- ington. We have performed numerous singouts for different oc- casions. We entertained in the Can- nington and Sunnycrest (Whitby) nursing homes also at an Anniver- sary in Orono. We especially en- - joyed a singout at the regular Sun- day Church Service in the United Church at Orono. The Port Perry singouts consisted of the High School Reunion, Canada Day celebration and a Bandshell concert also the Blackstock Fair and the Pineridge Garden Club's an- nual meeting. To raise funds.we catered a ban- quet for the Landowners Snowmobile Club and a wedding. ~ We also hosted Area V competition in Barrie and we were in Rochester for the Internationals. Guild The Louise Patterson Handicraft Guild held its Christmas meeting on Dec. 9. The hall was nicely decorated by the members and a lovely pot luck luncheon was enjoyed. After the lun- cheon we sang Christmas Carols which "was followed by the distributing of gifts. These were all hand made by the members. The gifts consisted of knitting, crocheting, trapunto, hooking, quilting, needle point, etc. A very - enjoyable day. There were 19 members present. Next meeting is January 13, 1988 at 10:00 a.m. All those interested in crafts and rug hooking are most welcome.
