PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 22, 1987 -- 11A Cecil presents prizes TN Six local children were among the winners of the Durham Region Lung Association's 1987 Christmas Seal essay and colouring contest. Last Friday, December 18, they received their prizes from the association's mascot, Cecil, the Sen- sible Seal. The contest, which drew numerous entries from across the Region, was developed primarily as an awareness program on the im- portance of good lung health. In ad- dition to artwork, Grade 3 to 6 par- ticipants composed an essay on the topic, "Why My Lungs Are Impor- tant." Younger children (grades kindergarten to 2) submitted art work only. Contest organizers and judges tor the Lung Association were extreme- ly pleased with the encouraging in- crease in participation this year. "We feel that this is due, in no small part, to the support received from local newspapers," said Cam- paign Chairman Lorna Braid. Prize winners took home Christmas stockings filled with toys and gift certificates from Baskin- aac ab A Robbins, Canada's Wonderland, Family Kartways, John Green tauthor), Irwin Toys, Mattel Toys, Metro Zoo and Mother's Pizza. The Christmas Seal Essay and Colouring Contest is one of many on going educational programs for children offered year rognd by Durham Region Lung Association. All association activities are financ- ed by public support of the annual Christmas Seal Campaign. if Local kids sweep contest Local winners include: Michael Gouldburn, Prince Albert, 2nd prize in Grades 5 and 6; Lindsey Crouter, Blackstock, 2nd, Grades 3 and 4; Andrew Jacobson, Port Perry, 3rd, Grades 3 and 4; Melissa Gouldburn, Prince Albert, 5rd, Grades 3 and 4; Alexandra Carter, Seagrave, 2nd, Grades K to 2; Christopher Wilhelm, Seagrave, 2nd, Grades K to 2. Display cards stylishly For many people the arrival of the first greeting card early in December marks the start of the Christmas season. Displaying cards, in an attractive manner is one way to turn this friendly custom into a decorative feature. Barbara Huard, Senior Product Manager for Carlton Cards, has some innovative suggestions for displaying Christmas cards with style: * A card tree is an attractive way to display cards. Spray or paint bare winter branches with white, silver or gold and arrange in a large vase. Hang with a selection of smaller cards and add a few ribbon bows or tree decorations for a striking display. (Punch a hole in the corner of each card and hang onto branches with gold or silver cord tied in bows). * An assortment of cards becomes a garland when clipped or tied to lengths of string and strung across the walls or up the staircase. ---------- Meet the talented winners of the Durham Lung Association's colouring and essay contest.
