30A -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 22, 1987 Letter to the editor A child's anguis To The Editor: Many years ago, when | was a child of about ten, a children's publication ran a small story. While I can't recall the entire story today, its theme is something 1 will never forget. It dealt with a little girl of my own age, telling of her increasing an- ticipation of her birthday, two weeks hence. It told of her delicious excite ment when the morning of the big day arrived. Upon wakening and racing down the stairs for usual shouts of con- gratulations, she instead is brought up short in confusion. Yes, there are decorations galore, jubilation and everywhere, many gatherings of friends and family. Her confusion comes from their apparent unawareness of her presence Toasts were offered, party foods, music and celebrations. But no one saw or spoke to her as she moved from room to room, party to party Finally, out came the gifts. "Ah, my birthday presents," she ex claimed. They have remembered me at last. But no, the guests were giving the gifts to Each Other! "Wait! This is My birthday It's Me you came to honour." Spying a group of her friends, she ran to them. "It's my birthday," she burst out. **Did you bring something for me?" But the children continued to play with all their new toys, unaware of her. Finally, she located her parents. Her mother was busy serving food, entertaining friends. Her father was handing out gifts while enjoying a drink and laughing with his collegues from work. She tugged, hard, at her mother's sleeve. Her elation when her mother glanced down at her quicky turned to anguish as she explained that she was busy just now, run along and play. We'll talk later. The little girl stood, surrounded by all the happy people "Please!" she cred. 1 am here. Don't you know me" Don't you love me"" At the end of the night, she sadly made her way to bed. Well, she thought, I'm glad they all had such a good time. But nobody even thought of me. And it was my birth- day too. Barb Weatherall, Port Perry.
