2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, December 30, 1987 Highest award for youth Prestigious Duke of Edinburgh awards fo seven teenagers Mayor Jerry Taylor had the honour of presenting seven young Scugog Township residents the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh's Award at the council chambers on Monday, December 21. Receiving the Bronze awards were Stephen Connors, Jennifer Fletcher and Kevin Gibson. The Silver awards, Julie Bryant, Julie Byers and Esther Kelly, and the prestigious Gold award to Nancy Green. The Duke of Edinburgh's award in Canada is the most prestigious achievement award for young Cana- dians, a challenge from Prince Philip to ALL young people between the ages of 14 and 25. Participation in the program represents a personal commitment to constructive endeavour, pro- moting qualities of self-discipline, self-help and self-reliance. Mrs. Shirley Turner, the co- ordinator for the program in Scugog Township told council that the award was set up 25 years ago when the Duke of Edinburgh challenged the youth of the Commonwealth countries. Mrs. Turner outlined the program to the members of council, explain- ing that there were three award levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold. "Within each of the levels, a par- ticipant in the award program must qualify and satisfy the requirements of the four sections, namely: Ser- vice, Expeditions, Skills and Fitness," she said. Three members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 419 from Port Perry were present during the ceremony, and Ed Mulholland presented Mrs. Turner with a che- que for $350 to help offset the ex- penses of running the program. ""We are indeed fortunate to have the Royal Canadian Legion here. They are always ready and willing to support the youth of our com- munity," Mrs. Turner said in accep ting the cheque.
