8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, December 30, 1987 Chatterbox by Cathy Olliffe (From page 4) I was so overwhelmed, I forgot exactly what was said bet- ween us as she drove, but I do remember her asking if I belong- ed to the media, and I recall explaining the whole situation. I also remember feeling dirty and disgusting, all sweaty and out of puff, beside the immaculate TV reporter. And I remember me saying, 'You're Lin Eleoff, aren't you?" , as awestruck as if I had just been introduced to the Prime Minister. The ride seemed to go on forever, not because it was long, but because I felt like I was in a dream. But it was actually a short ride, as we passed the caravan, and pulled over to the spot where I had started walking what seemed like a year ago. ""There's Norm!" I shrieked happily, catching a glimpse of Norm running with the torch. I hop out of the car quickly, saying to my rescuer, 'Thanks! I owe you a photo credit!" And then I was off -- I only had a few seconds before Norm would sweep by me again, so I ditched my camera bag and pointed the camera in his direction, not even really thinking about focus or exposure. He wasn't looking in my direction, so I shouted "NORM!"' at the top of my voice, and he turned, grinned wider, and yelled back, "CATHY!" I had time to fire off three shots before the waving and smil- ing torchbearer started disappearing into the distance. I couldn't believe I had got the shots, and all the way back to the office, I worried about whether or not they would turn out. They didn't have any right to turn out, they should have been blurred, or too light or dark, but when I finished developing the film, I whooped with delight. The pictures were perfect. They showed the spirit of the relay off in all its glory reflected in the smile on Norm's face. That night, after the paper was finished, as I lay in bed, I reflected on the day's events. By rights, I should have missed the entire thing. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. And yet, three things work- ed in my favour, three wonderful coincidences: 1.) Lin Eleoff picked me up and drove me to the right spot at the right time. 2.) Norm Ball heard my shout and responded by looking right at the camera, despite the cheers from the crowd. 3.) My camera seemed to focus all on its own, something it isn't technologically capable of doing. And I wonder, why did Lin offer me a ride ? What was it that made her pull over and offer a complete stranger a lift when she was busy with her own story? I realize she must be a nice person, but I can't help but feel there was some other reason. Maybe it was the spirit of the flame, or maybe it was simply Christmas spirit. Whatever, that night I couldn't sleep. I felt extremely lucky, as though something magical had happened. And I believe it was some type of magic, the magic of goodwill, of charity, and of Christmas itself. Thank you Lin, wherever you are. I hope I can pay you back some day. « MACKEY & BAILEY BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS Saturday Mornings - Lake Scugog Lumber Building Oshawa Rd., Port Perry 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon (416) 985-7391 auto glass & trim 1d. eC rr A tl ek P> PERRY HM Windshields BH Auto Upholstery @ Marine Upholstery BOAT TOPS - BOAT SEATS - MOORING COVERS HB Sunroofs BM Convertible Tops HM Vinyl Tops HB Safety Glass 139 WATER STREET -- PORT PERRY Call for your appointment: 985-8507 Free Mobile Service i With this Coupon ... | INSURANCE | CLAIMS -- WE NOW SELL MOBILE CELLULAR PHONES -- Congratulations are due!
