Port takes Consolation The Stone Realty Pee Wees started the new year off in fine form by winning the Consolation Cham- pionship in Fenelon Falls on Saturday. The boys first game of the day was against Haliburton and we won this game by a 3-1 score. This vic- tory eliminated Haliburton from the tournament and insured Port of a 3rd game. Scoring for Stone were Brendon Agnew assisted by Jody Logan, Jeff Card assisted by Billy The Pineridge Sports Atom No. 2 team suffered 2 losses over' the holidays. Port Perry s first loss came against the team from Omemee. Omemee jumped jnto the lead and never looked back scoring 6 goals before Richie Tripp assisted by Ricky Olaisen popped one into the net robbing the Omemee goaltender of a shutout. Way to go Richie. Final score Omemee 6 - Port Perry 1. Special mention to Kirk Swain who played a very strong game. Port Perrys second loss came on Jan. 2 in a hard fought game against Millbrook. Millbrook opened the scoring but Port Perry came right back and tied it up on a goal by Ricky Olaisen assisted by Graham Holt. Millbrook took the lead in the third period but Craig Laird being Sandiford and Jody Logan assisted by Peter King. "This was a penalty filled contest with both teams playing much of the game with only 3 players on the ice. After a 1 hour break, Port played its second game against the Oshawa Major Bruins. The Stone gang was noticeably tired but put up a valiant effort against the stronger Bruin team. Except for a 2 minute, 28 se- cond lapse in the first period in which Oshawa scored 4 goals it Atoms lose two in the right place at the right time stole the puck, got a breakaway and tied the game up scoring a shor- thanded goal. The score remained tied until the last minute when Millbrook scored and the game ended in favour of Millbrook 3-2. Matt Morris did some excellent checking in this game. James Paterson and Scot Prechitko should get a pat on the back for keeping the score as low as it was with their con- sistant effort between the pipes. Special mention to coach *'Stitch" Prechitko for all the little extras beyond the call of duty he does for his boys. Port Perry plays Monday night against Bowmanville - Thursday against Bwedley and on to a tourna- ment in Haliburton this weekend. . Good luck team! would have been a very close game. The boys tightened up after this lapse and only allowed 3 goals the rest of the game in losing 7-0. The loss to the Bruins put Stones in the Consolation final against the Oshawa Minor Canadiens. Forty- five minutes after losing to the Bruins Port hit the ice to play the Canadiens. The obviously tired boys played a strong game in winning the final 4-1. Scoring for Port were Kenny 'Winslow from Steve Desautels and Sean McEnaney. Jeff Card put Port up 2-0 assisted by Billy Sandiford and Peter King. After Oshawa nar- rowed the gap, Sean McEnaney restored the 2 goal lead on a nice breakaway goal with a set-up from Steve Desautels. Then Kenny Winslow finished off the scoring in a goal mouth scramble with assists going to Adam Johnston and Bren- don Agnew. All of the boys played well during the day and deserve credit for their victory, especially since they played their first game at 11:30 in the mor- ning and never had a chance to take their equipment off until 5:00 when they had won the final. Special mention should go to goaltenders Steve Stiles and Mat Willetts who were strong when call- ed upon. The Stone gang has a busy week coming up travelling to Orono on Monday, Oshawa on Wednesday aud hosting Bowmanville on Satur- day at 8:48. Come on out and sup- port the Stone Realty Pee Wee team and Minor Hockey. Over the holiday season the Pee Wee Legionaires participated in a tournament in Gananoque and came home with the championship. The team played their first game against Cobourg, and came out very slow. Cobourg was leading 2-0 throughout the game and with only 3 minutes and forty seconds left Port was finally able to score their first goal. Jeff Parry picked up the goal, with the assists from Jason Cochrane and Gavin Cochrane. Jeff Parry scored again for Port with a hard shot coming from the face-off won by Jason Cochrane. This put the game into over-time and Duane Empringham made short work of the over-time period by scoring after only 32 seconds of play. Assisting on the goal was Brad Moase and Jeff Andrews. The boys then met Stirling and won their game by a 6-3 margin. Jason Cochrane caught the top cor- ner of the net to put Port ahead 1-0 at the 7 minute mark. Steve Laird assisted on the goal. The teams both played well and Stirling was able to tie up the game before the second period. Port played real strong in the second period and chalked up 4 goals to Stirling's 1. Simon Traynor made a great shot from the point to score, and Duane Empringham picked up the assist after winning the face-off to get the puck back to Simon. Steve Laird scored our next goal after maintaining his balance while being hooked by two Stirling players. Jason Cochrane and Jeff Parry assisted on the goal. Duane Empringham caught a rebound shot to score the Legionnaires next goal, with the assist from Brad Moase. Steve Laird again scored for Port, while falling in front of the net he was able to poke the puck underneath the goalie's legs. Jason Cochrane assisted on Steve's goal. In the final period Jason McBride scored our final goal on a high shot over the goaltender. Chris MacLeod and Dave Pashley worked hard to earn the assists. Rick Hutchinson played between the pipes for the first half of the game and stopped some hard, and fast shots. Shawn Larocque was the goaltender for the second half of the game and was able to make 14 great saves, with only 2 goals against. The team then advanced into the championship game against Kingston Township. Unfortunately because of an in- jury in the second game, Brad Moase had to sit out the third game, but he assisted with his encourage- ment, as well as helping on the bench. Kingston had a good strong team but were only able to hold off our boys for one period. We outshot them 13-4 in the first period, - however, Kingston was ahead 1-0. In the second period. Jason Cochrane scored our first goal on a bachhand shot, with the assists to Simon Traynor and Jeff Parry. Steve Laird scored again within; 40 seconds with a high corner shot. Jason Cochrane assisted on that goal. Nathan Brown scored the final goal on a great passing play by Steve Laird and Empringham. Again Shawn Larocque and Rick Hutchinson shared the goaltending and had to play tough to keep the score at 3-1. The Kingston team played a strong, close checking game of hockey so all the boys should be congratulated at how well they had to play to win the championship. Our boys have three league games slotted for next week on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, so keep up the great work Legionaires! Broomball results B & L Donuts defeated Emmer- sons 1 to 0 in a tight game. The goal was scored unassisted by Eric Kristensen. Goreskis came out on top of Odd- fellows 3 to 1. Scoring for Goreskis was Dave Dickson with two and Tom Powell. Assists went to Gene Woodrow and Dave Dickson. Oddfellows goal scored by Scott Heard from Steve Robinson. Utica & Blackstock played to a 0-0 tie in regulation time. But due to lack of time the overtime will be played at the next meeting between these two teams. Not much luck The Sportsland Juniors par- ticipated in the Markham Tourna- ment over the weekend. Our first game was at the Milliken Arena, aainst the Scarborough Juniors. This was a fast end to end game, with all our girls working together as a team, but unfortunately came away the losers 8-5. Lisa Levy had 4 goals and Nicole Slack 1 goal. Michelle Beare had an assist. Our second game the next day saw us back at the Milliken Arena, up against last years Provincial winners, North Bay. Our girls lost this one 11-0, but that doesn't mean they didn't try. A penalty riddled game, where perhaps a rule book would have been handy to interpret some of the calls. Markham Juniors was the final team the Sportsland girls came up against Sunday afternoon at the Thornhill Arena. Again the girls came out of this one the losers 6-3, but made Markham work hard for their win. Our goals were scored by Lisa Levy with 2 goals, and Kelly Calloway with 1 goal. Nicole Slack had 1 assist. If you girls know who numbers 13 and 17 are, please let me know, I'll make sure they get credit for the assists the refs said they got.
