12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 12, 1988 The Cross Country Centre at Dagmar | is brand new and boasts a heated waxing room, rental equipment and a snack bar. The Chalet:style building is the starting point to 600 acres of groomed trails. Ps Skiing the easy way ---- an instructor gives a youngster a tow during a lesson at Dagmar last While some may be cursing the week's newly fallen snow, ski buffs in the area are chomping at the bit waiting for their turn on the slopes. Not that there's much waiting in- volved around here. With Dagmar Ski Resort just around the corner, a day on skis is as easy as a 20 minute drive from Port Perry. Dagmar, on Durham Regional Road 23 just south of Durham Regional Road 21, has plenty to of- fer the alpine or cross-country en- thusiast this winter. Even if there's no snow on the ground in Scugog (which there is, now), there's lots of the white stuff "at Dagmar, about a foot and a half base, thanks to snow making machines. And if you don't have time to ski all day, you'll want to take advan- tage of Dagmar's innovative ski by the hour policy, allowing customers to pay only for the time they want to ski. On weekdays, two hours on the slopes cost only $8. On weekends, the price jumps slightly to $10. Friday morning. Sg oT The sign ("Never Skied") and this young lad's face pretty well explains this photo of a ning lessons at | group of school kids taking in some Friday mor- Dagmar. New this year is a Learn to Ski School, offered to people who have never skied before, For $19.95, beginners get four hours of full ren- tal equipment, four hours of skiing and a one hour lesson, on weekends only, with two sessions starting at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. But that's not all that's new at Dagmar. According to Robin Harris, public relations director at Dagmar, the most exciting addition to the ski resort is a new cross-country centre, complete with snack bar, heated waxing room, ski school and rental shop. The centre, she says, has been in the building stage for about a year and a half, and cost approximately $250,000. Built to resemble so- meone's home (a beautiful chalet- style home), it's a cozy starting point to Dagmar's cross-country trails, which spread over 600 acres. Although alpine skiers still out- number cross-country enthusiasts four to one, Robin claims cross- country is growing stronger every - year, with Toronto having the big- gest population of cross-country buffs in Canada. Dagmar is the scene of many special events this winter. New cross country ski centre at Dagmar On January 10, CFNY radio is hosting a Dual Slalom Challenge Race. On January 17, more than $2,500 in prizes will be handed out at the Miller Match 'n Win Race. On thesame day, a Telmark clinic will be held, along with a demonstration of new ski equipment by Old Firehall Sports. Old Firehall will be back on January 22 with another demonstration, the same night as a ski and surf party in the lounge. National Ski Week kicks off January 23 with several special events, including the grand opening of the new cross-country centre on January 30, 31. Throughout the week, races will be held each day, along with ribbon cuttings, evening torch parades, balloon rides and more Telemark clinics. The climax is a skiathalon on January 31 (sort of like a triathalon, except it's all on skiis). And there's plenty of special events happening throughout the rest of the winter as well. Dagmar is open seven days a week, Monday to Friday from 10a.m. to 10 p.m., on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 649-2002.
