No 'easy rides' in the next four weeks ~ MolJacks gear for stretch run and playoffs aw by John B. McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks are gearing up for the 'home stretch' in the Central Junior C season with seven tough games left before playoffs get underway early in February. After splitting a pair of weekend games with the Little Britain Mer- chants and Madoc Hurricanes, the MoJacks remain solidly in second place in the North Division with 35 points. - Clay Dempsey of the MoJacks came close to popping a goal on this play in Junior C hockey action at the Scugog Arena Sunday night. The Madoc Hurricanes were in town looking for their Forward Rob Baker had Madoc goalie Dan Elliott moving the "wrong way" on the clear cut, scoring chance during second period action bet- ween the Hurricanes and the MoJacks at the Scugog Arena Sunday evening. It was no contest as the MoJacks simply rolled over the opposition They are 12 behind division leading Lakefield and ten ahead of third place Little Britain. But there are no "easy rides" for the MoJacks in the seven remaining league games which include one with Bowmanville and .two with the Lakefield Chiefs. Last Saturday night the MoJacks went into Little Britain for a game with the Merchants and camé&home on the short end of a 3-2 score. After CEIEE Aw %s, A a scoreless first' period, the Mer- first win of the season, but the visitors were no match for the MoJacks who cruised to an easy 9-0 victory. (See story for details). chants went to work in the second with three goals by Jerry Kea, Paul Metherall and Larry Reid. The MoJacks seemed to find their skating legs in the final period and clicked for two power play markers by Craig Menzies and Steve Ashby. But that was as close as they could get. Paul Goreski was in the nets for the MoJacks and turned in a strong game as he faced 34 shots, including 16 in the opening period. The Mo- en route to a 9-0 white-wash. (See story). But things will get much tougher for Port Perry this week as the MoJacks meet three tough teams as the "home stretch" of the Junior C regular season gets underway. Jacks could manage just 22 against Rob Harris in the Merchant cage. This was a reasonably clean game with the Merchants taking 18 minutes in penalties and the Mo- Jacks 22. Four of the five goals scored in this one came on the power play. y On Sunday night at the Scugog Arena in front of the smallest crowd of the season, the MoJacks hardly worked up a sweat in cruising to a 9-0 win over the hapless Madoc Hur- ricanes. Brian Tarleton and Paul Goreski shared the goal-tending chores in this one, turning aside just 15 shots for the fourth MoJack shut- out this season. . The Hurricanes have managed just one tie so far this year, and while there is no lack of effort on the part of the Madoc players, they are simply not strong enough to com- pete affectively in the tough Central Junior League. After a clean, fast-skating first period, the game was chippy the rest of the way with numerous minor penalties and a couple of scuffles. MoJack defenseman Thane Ellis turned in a strong performance with three goals, including a short- handed marker in the third period on a breakaway. He collected his third of the night with just 15 seconds to play in the game on an outstanding end to end rush which he finished off with a back-hand to the corner of the net. The MoJacks jumped to an early 2-0 lead with goals in the span of 12 seconds on the power play by Craig Menzies and Steve Ashby. Dean Smethurst and Ellis rounded out the scoring in the first to give MoJacks a comfortable 4-0 lead. They added three more in the se- cond by captain Darren Nesbitt, Rob Baker and Smethurst with his second of the game. Thane Ellis was the only scorer in the final frame. Heading into the stretch run and the playoffs which get underway early in February, the MoJacks have signed Jeff McColl. Port Perry Junior C fans will remember McColl when he played here for two seasons as a fine skater and a player who thrives in a rough and tumble hockey game. Last year, he played the entire season with the Oshawa Junior B's and he's playing this year for Sir Sandford Fleming College in Lindsay. McColl plays defense and his presence down the st: 'ch will giv the team some added depth. It was a lack of depth which hurt the team in the second round of the playoffs last season when the MoJacks bow- ed out of a gruelling six-game series with the Uxbridge Bruins. The MoJacks have three very tough road games this week starting tonight (Jan. 12) when they travel to Bowmanville for the only time this' season. The Eagles no doubt will be out to avenge the 9-2 defeat they took in Port Perry on December 30. Game time is 8:30. On Friday night (Jan. 15) the Mo- Jacks will be in Uxbridge for an 8:30 game against the Bruins, a team which has given the MoJacks trou- ble all year. Then on Sunday (Jan. 17) the MoJacks will play a rare afternoon match against the Divi- sion leading Chiefs in Lakefield. Face off for that one is set for 1:30 PM. The next home game for the MoJacks at the Scugog Arena is Sunday, January 24 when the Little Britain Merchants are in town for a 7:30 start.
