10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 19, 1988 New Chamber directors (From page 2) Mr. O'Malley began his speech to about 150 local business people Jammed into the Latcham Centre by noting that Standard Trust was founded 25 years ago by Steven Roman, who has always had a soft spot for Scugog and Port Perry. When Mr. Roman first arrived in Canada half a century ago as a 17-year old immigrant from Europe, he worked as a farm labourer in this area. From these humble beginn- ings, of course, he went on to ac- quire a huge fortune in industry and business. But he has never forgotten Port Perry and even now, according to Mr. O'Malley, Mr. Roman sometimes drops in un-announced to the Standard Trust branch office in this community. NEW THEME In other business at the annual meeting last week, it was announc- ed that the theme for this year's Festival Days will be changed from Caribbean to British. The three-day Festival held each year in July has been a fine success with the Carib- _bean theme the last couple of years, but organizers decided it is time for a change, and opted to "go British" in 1988. Also, on a suggestion from the floor, the Chamber of Commerce directors agreed to look into the possibilities of staging a winter car- nival in Port Perry next year, using Lake Scugog as the focal point. Out-going Chamber president "Elgin Knopp told the meeting the organization now has a membership of 128, and the purpose of the Chamber is not to show a profit, but to promote the community' and bring visitors to Scugog Township. Such events as Festival Days, the Santa Claus Parade and the Canada Day fireworks have been very suc- cessful in bringing people into the community. Entertainment for the annual meeting was provided by the Coun- try Chords harmony group who sang several numbers including a humourous musical skit. oe ie REE 1 Patrick G.
