12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 19, 1988 Future expansion almost sure Techstar Plastics Inc. will begin moving into the former Flamingo Vachon Plant in Port Perry about mid-February, and the company should be able to resume production by March 1. "Things look very good for us. If we had any concerns about the future (sales and growth) we would be staying right here (in Scar- borough). We would not be moving anywhere," he stated. In fact, he suggested that a doubl- ing of the present 22,000 square feet at the Simcoe Street plant is a possibility within the next few years. With five large injection molding machines, Techstar turns out plastic containers and bins of all sizes and colours. They are used for everything from collecting garbage in factory settings, laundry in laun- nursing homes. Ontario now is the major market for the products (about 75 per cent) with the re- mainder shipped to customers in the rest of Canada and the United States. Techstar Plastics makes a wide range of plastic products, but the malhstay of the business is containers like the "tilt truck" demonstrated in above photo by president Bill Barnes. The com-' pany had gross sales last year of about $3 million, and Mr. Barnes told the Star the future is very bright. In fact, Techstar almost certainly will be looking at expansion of the former Vachon plant. (See story for details). He ad OCCASION! | lt As rd i PORT PERRY has an extensive background in the plasties industry. In fact, he and the other two shareholders all worked for the same company a decade ago when they decided to go "'on their own" and form their own firm. He is very proud of the products his company makes, stating blunt- ly '"'we make the best quality (pro- ducts) in Canada and the United States." When production in Scarborough shuts down February 15, the five large molding machines will be loaded on trucks and shipped to the new location in Port Perry at a cost of about $20,000. Setting the machines up and starting produc- tion will take another two weeks or - so, and in the interim the office staff will make the move on February 20. Mr. Barnes told the Star it will be a new experience for himself and his company to move from Scar- borough to Port Perry. As one of literally hundreds of small to medium companies in east Toronto, nobody paid much attention to Techstar. But the move to a small community will change that. The profile here will be considerably higher than it was in Scarborough. Since the brief announcement ap- peared in the Port Perry Star January 12, naming Techstar as the new owner of the Flamingo plant, Mr. Barnes said the company has had numerous phone calls from peo- ple enquiring about employment, or wishing to sell a product or service. Mr. Barnes told the Star that once the move to Port Perry has been completed, every effort will be made to buy goods and services locally, part of the good corporate citizen policy. + The sale of the plant by Vachon" Inc. of Quebec to Techstar came about as a result of the shut-down of the pastries operation announced last October 6. Vachon has moved its pastry production lines to a plant it bought last summer in Aurora. About 100 Vachon employees lost their jobs as a result. The final shut-down for Vachon took place January 15. But in a lit- tle more than a month, production of a product of a different kind will start in the plant on Simcoe Street. Say it with a ...
