The Port Perry Midget Rebels basketball team has been enjoying a fine season to date, undefeated in league play and just two defeats in tournament competition. The team recently: won the Brock Invitational tournament, and was with five wins in league play and no defeats. The Juniors have yet to enter a tournament. At PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 19, 1988 -- 21 The Malmont Farms atoms con- ~ tinued their recent solid play this "weekend, producing a win and a tie in exhibition games with Oshawa LNHL teams. Friday night against the Black Hawks, Port. fell behind 1-0 in the first period, then took over for a 3-1 victory. Neil Mueller tied the game mid- way through the second after an ex- cellent rush by Scott Heasman. Ken- ton LeFort also drew an assist on the goal. Chad Kearns then paid the price tosset up the winner, as two Hawks crunched him just as he released the pass to a wide open Jay Tredway. Jay's high shot gave the goalie no chance. Jay King started the play and got a well-deserved assist. Early in the third, Dave Bourgeois banged in a loose puck for the insurance goal on assists from Jeremy Norton and Chad Kearns. Steve Gilbert provided strong goaltending throughout the game to Atoms win Saturday night, against a better Canadians club, Malmont held a considerable territorial margin; but again fell behind. Near the end of the second period Neil Mueller fed a pass back to the point, where Jay King fired a perfect low shot through traffic into the far corner to tie the game 1-1 on the power play. This game was a fairly rugged one with 22 minutes in penalties assessed, 14 to the Canadians. After Oshawa had taken the lead again early in the third, Scott Heasman took over. Scott; who has been a power not only defensively but as a rusher all season; took a pass from Chad Kearns and with a fine individual effort scored to tie the score at 2-2. It was then Mike Pashley's turn at heroics as he completed another outstanding game with one amazing glove save to preserve Port's tie. Malmont's next action will be this weekend when they travel to Peter- boro for the annual tournament. } finalist in tournaments at G.L. Robert and in Bowmanville. Currently, the Midgets hold down first in league standings, winning most of their games by solid margins. Not present for photo are B.J. McCullough and Drew Cardinal. On Jan. 16-17, the Re/Max Scugog Lakers ventured north and par- ticipated in the Little Britain Pioneers Oldtimers tournament. Game 1 found the Lakers against Whitby Marigolds and skated to a one to one draw with Clarence Stephenson popping the solo marker for Port with assists going to Ken Smart and Mike Driscoll. Game 2 saw the Lakers dominate Scarborough Movers 7 to 4. In the early going some nifty passing saw the line of Arnie May, Carl Fit- zgerald and Tom Patton pop 3 goals in one shift and the Lakers never ~ looked back from that point on. The line of Doug Parker, Rick Olaisen and Denzil 'Baby Face" Irving rounded out the Lakers scoring. Game 3 put the Re/Max Lakers in a must win situation and with m guys rushing from the Sunday M ning Mens League, the Lakers rose to the occasion to outskate the Ajax Beermen 3 to 2. The Championship final on Sun- day afternoon had the Scugog Lakers locking horns again with a tough Whitby Marigold team. Strong goaltending by Peter Nau- -mienko combined with tough defence by Lee Steeves and Bob Lee and Ted Blanchard and "Bubba" proved to be more than Whitby could handle. Tallies were notched by Doug Lakers win all the marbles Parker from Denzil Irving and Rick Olaisen then Dave Mann scored from the shot from Carl Fitzgerald and Arnie May. And the icing on the victory was a 190 ft. rocket into the empty Whitby net by Lee Steeves when Ken Smart won the draw in the Lakers end cleanly. Consumers went ahead on a shor- thanded goal by Mike Olaisen assisted by Kevin Brown. Manvers scored the next 2 goals but Consumers Ryan Ridgeway scored from the blue line unassisted ending the second period at a 3-3 tie. This goal was also a shorthanded effort. Manvers scored early in the third - period and it was a very tense game for Consumers as they pressed to tie it up. In the last minute of the game Mike Olaisen passed the puck from * the face-off to Ross Stainton who popped it into the net. The Consumers team returned home extremely happy with the tie as they have only p'ayed 1 game so far this year and th.s was the first time away from here.
